Q: MacBook Pro Retina stuck at bootup

Hello community,

a few days ago I turned off my MacBook Pro (Retina late 2012 running Yosemite) and when I came back to fire it back up I logged in regularly and a loading bar popped up. Up until then I thought everything was normal and it was installing some kind of update. It had loaded approximately 35% and stopped so I left it like that for a few hours, but when I came back nothing had happened. I restarted the computer multiple times and got the same result every single time.

Please help! I really don't want to lose all my data!
(No, I have not created a backup..)

Thanks in advance

Stefano

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Thank you for the extremely fast response!
This looks like it could work. I have gotten to the Disk Utility but I don't know what you meant by (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) and the S.M.A.R.T. status.

Hi when in disk utilities the first drive that appears at the top left will say, for example. 250GB toshiba. The status is down at the bottom on the right side. you have to click on the first drive to see it.

    Could you be clearer? What info do you not get? Can you take a snap of the Disk Utility window to post here;

To post screen shot do this:

    1. Press COMMAND-SHIFT-4 which will change the cursor to crosshairs.
    2. Hold down the mouse button and use the crosshairs to select the part of the screen you wish to capture.
    3. Release the button and the image will be saved to your Desktop.
    4. Click on the Camera icon in the toolbar of the forum message editor.
    5. Drag the image onto the Choose File button and click on the Insert button.

Alright so I entered the Disk Utility through recovery mode. It won't let me take a screenshot.

So, what is it you have a problem with? There is no SMART info reported on your setup which is completely normal. Just continue on.

Hi you can't take screenshots from recovery, You need a desktop to keep it to. Your main hard disk is the very top disk on the left side. It should look like thisScreen shot 2015-02-12 at 6.18.36 PM.png

my problem is that the system won't fire up. it gets stuck at a loading bar that indicates that some kind of update is being installed. but it always gets to a certain point and simply stops and doesn't do anything for hours and hours.

Hi there are two other things you can try. One is a safe mode.. And the other is single user mode. If you have it set and need to login you will need you password for safe mode.  http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262     http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176

Hi I just noticed something that can add to the problem.  In your screen shot of disk utilities it shows 8.9 Gigs of free space. you need at lest 25 G of free space. Your disk is getting too full.
