Q: PLEASE HELP - MACHINE SLOW

Ive always been told and read that Apple products (MacBook Pro) are not affected by the normal issues that a say Windos based PC may be.

My MacBook Pro has 68 GB of spare memory out of the 500GB.

I can confirm that I have only ever used the machine to log onto genuine and mainly secure web sites and have only download application from the app store.

My machine at times can be that slow even typing text I have to wait for the curser to catch up.

I have just recently started seeing a bigger issue where iTunes and iPhoto hang up more times than they actually one normally and where I can use and this is really concerning.

Would really appreciate some advice on what action to take.

Thank you

MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Memory left is borderline sufficient and you don't say how much RAM you have.

Why not download and apply the Etre check program, here, and paste the report into your reply here.

In itself it won't solve your problem but it could give us a lead.

68GB out of 500GB is not really a great deal of free disk space. This is also storage, not memory. It could be suffice but may not be the best for good performance depending on what disk type you have.

    You could run this…

    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

…and post a report.  It will give us a lot of info about what is on the OS.

Other options are running tests in other user accounts or safe mode, you may also consider checking logs or waiting to see if Linc Davis provides you with some log parsing commands

It will help if you can isolate when it happens & what apps seem to be running.

Sadly Apple computers are not magic, they will suffer if they are filled with an excess of software, they are just a bit better able to cope than your average Windows machine

P.S. Nuneaton huh? Mornin from another midlander

You could buy a portable external HD just for films or music you may have been storing.   That could release a significant amount.    Incidentally, I have a Midlands background too; Birmingham was where I was born and grew up.

The author of etrecheck made this page

    Using EtreCheck

The short version is, launch the app, wait a few minutes & then it should show the system report with stuff organised for troubleshooting. Copy & paste the report here, just check for any personal info (it tries to obfuscate that).

If it crashes or something else we should rethink, more may be going on If the OS is very unstable.

Do you have a backup, if so what kind?

    Problem description:

My MacBook Pro has started to operate slowly and especially with iPhoto and iTunes, my machine hangs up and I have to force quit more times than i would want too. I have looked at the CPU usage when this occurs and its not always using much CPU but then on other times can be 100% plus. Sometimes even string text can be a slow process but not the norm.

I'm going to be offline for most of the day, so this a quick one, 71 may be able to explain some of it too.

Blackberry - is it used? The Blackberry download has an uninstaller if you want it gone.

WD make bad Mac software, I'd remove if you can. It really depends on what it does for you, an external HD shouldn't require extra software unless it is using some complex non standard way.

The volume of iPhoto crashes is frightfully concerning. I have to wonder if the library is damaged. We need to know what version iPhoto is. There are some repair options for the library too (startup keys iirc).

I would try to make another backup if possible, Time machine has had a crash.

I'd try a safe boot with iPhoto & iTunes to see if other apps are crashing them.

Also try launching them in another (test) user account to see if the apps are capable of running.

I'd repair the HD from recovery mode.

seventy one, any ideas on log entries to look for to detect disk failure? It looks like it's on shaky ground.

I'm off into the murky grey daylight

Drew, thank you for this, with regards to the Blackberry I can't see this in Finder, application or anywhere, I had though Id deleted sometime ago.

Can you please expand on WD make bad software? I do have a WD My Cloud and WD My Book Studio for back ups etc. If you advise I can replace with another form of backup, again please advise.

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:

A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)

Not enough memory for your usage pattern

Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.

These instructions are for OS X 10.9 and later. Some details may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.

When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select

View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory

    from the menu bar.

If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.

The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.

Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.

"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.

If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.

The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:

sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total

where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the  leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

Try Linc Davis's suggestion first, it may show you what to remove, after that post back & mull over this…

It is safest to make a backup before you begin, removing items shouldn't break the OS, but it's better safe than sorry. At the very least, make sure the Time Machine menu has a recent time for the latest backup (or run one first).

    RIM
Blackberry has a system extension installed & running. It is loaded into the kernel which is where the OS communicates with the hardware (e.g. process 0).

I think it needs to go if not used - it seems to be made for earlier OS's. This may be the download, unless you can remember installing some other software from RIM?

When 10.9 came out a few users found their external HD became erased, it resulted in this long thread (& some others)…

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5475611?start=0&tstart=0

Many blamed Apple, the common software was WD had items installed on all the systems that were erasing disks. I think it was Smartware - it was badly written - it erased the MyBook. WD released updates and a 'removal' tool. The 'removal' tool also installed extra software to stop other versions being installed, it's sneaky IMO to add stuff when the aim is removal.

See this for the concise info…

    WD, Seagate, and Toshiba drives

Their WD MyCloud software seems OK, not great but just about sufficient to make the network disks useful. MyCloud doesn't seem to have installed low level drivers so they can't trash your OS when the app ins't running (I'm assuming you have MyCloud installed).

The WD disks are generally OK in my experience - many users here frown upon them, I have had one MyBook case fail when the disk inside was still OK.

    I would remove WDDriveManagerStatusMenu, WDQuickView.

NOTE the 'com.apple.wd' task is from Apple, not WD.

Does WD have backup software that you use? I would use CarbonCopyCloner instead (in fact I do use it). Time Machine should be fine with their disks.

    Grrr

Is Growl up to date too? Check 'System Preferences > Growl' for updates. The App store version is getting old now, version 1.2.2 was made for 10.6, so it may not be compatible either - this lists version info…

These items may make some difference, but they may not resolve the issue I just think it's best to clear them out & reboot to see if the OS is more stable.

Reboot and rerun Etrecheck & to see if the RIM & WD software is gone.

Drew, I can also confirm iPhoto version is 9.6 (910.29)

My Mac general after doing the actions which you all have provided has improved things - thank you.

Still have issues with iPhoto hanging up and I have to keep force quitting.

The message on screen is "not enough application memory" can this be adjusted and if so so how, this appears to be the only problem.

    Would you advise comprising iPhoto????
