Q: outbox very slow; extra accounts in Connection Doctor

In an effort to figure out why mail seems to sit for minutes in the outbox before sending a searched here for a solution. One suggestion is that I use the Mail Connection Doctor.

When I do that I see eight accounts as follows; but in (Sys Pref) Accounts I only have three (a normal account and two aliases)

  • Status     Name    Type    Details

  • RED     one     SMTP     Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct.

  • GRN     one@mac.com     iCloud IMAP     Connection and login to server succeeded.

  • GRN     two          iCloud IMAP     Connection and login to server succeeded.

  • RED     Gmail     SMTP     Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct.

  • RED     Gmail     SMTP     Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct.

  • RED     smpt.me.com:two     SMTP     Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct.

  • RED     smtp.me.com:three    SMTP     Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct.

  • GRN     three     iCloud IMAP     Connection and login to server succeeded.

So, to summarise what I see; each of my three accounts is shown in the green once. Two Gmail accounts (which was deleted from accounts years ago) in the Red The Gmail account still exists, but the password would have changed a few times. Two accounts named "smtp.me" + alias name shown in the Red.

I'm guessing that I've got some old accounts lurking in some setting somewhere. When Mail tries to access these accounts it waits to resolve the status on all accounts before my messages gets sent.

So how can I get rid of these lurking accounts? I'm a basic user, but can use terminal without trepidation!

Many thanks in advance.

Select a disused SMTP (outgoing mail) account in the Connection Doctor window. Double-click it. Another window will open, showing a list of all the outgoing mail accounts. The unwanted one will be selected. Click the minus-sign button to delete it, then click OK.

If there's more than one unwanted account, repeat.

Thanks Linc, that solved one of the problems. I no longer have old accounts listed in the connection doctor report!!!

However, outgoing e-mails still just sit in the outbox for minutes. This is both on my iMac and my wife's MacBook (late 2009) Sometimes the only way we can get them to go is to close Mail and reopen it but that doesn't always work. On the same home network we have iPads and iPhones where sending e-mails does not have any delay. Also if we log onto mail via Safari, no problem.

My wife is threatening to move to Outlook if I can't solve this problem. (Yes, I know, that would be the same as logging onto mail via Safari!) Please help ...

Do you have the problem only with one account, or with all?

    Link,

My wife and I have our own .mac accounts. I also have two aliases.

The problem exists on all three of my accounts, and the account my wife uses. I just tried sending a message from my aliases, something I don't do very often, and it took about two minutes for the messages to be sent.

I really do appreciate your help here ... !!!

    Just to add;

Messages will not go if Mail is closed, or the Mac is put to sleep. Unsent messages will be there when Mail is next opened, or the Mac awaken.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then send a message in Mail. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Are these accounts all on the same server, or on different servers? If all are on the same server, please open the iCloud preference pane, sign in with an Apple ID, and check the box marked Mail. That will give you a new (free) mail account. Test.

All the accounts are '.mac' accounts - I assume these are all on the same server.

I'm not certain what you are suggesting I do in iCloud. Signing out and signing back in again doesn't give me a new (free) mail account. Unless you meant to get a new Apple ID first, and then a new mail account.

I'm confused by your reports. You say you have three ".mac" accounts, but those would all be iCloud accounts, and you can't have more than one of those at a time. From your original post, you also have a Gmail account, which would not be a .mac address. Please clarify.

    I'm sorry if I haven't been clear.

Years ago I set up an email account with apple. At that time the domain was 'mac.com'. One feature offered by apple was the ability to create aliases. At that time I created two aliases. Since then mac.com has migrated to me.com and then to icloud.com. I use the mac.com domain exclusively but I can send/receive an email at accountname@mac.com; accountname@me.com or accountname@icloud.com. The same applies to my two aliases.

So, from my perspective I have one account (now called iCloud) and two aliases on my iMac. My wife has one account on her Macbook.

A few years back I also had a gmail account which I since have deleted from Mail and Calendars. Following your suggestion I also managed to delete these gmail accounts from the Connection Doctor - It had appeared to me to be the reason for slow sending - as the Mail application was failing to connect to old accounts.

I'm sorry if I have been using the wrong terms and causing confusion.

Edited to add: I found this iCloud: About your @icloud.com, @me.com, and @mac.com email addresses - Apple Support

iCloud: About your @icloud.com, @me.com, and @mac.com email addresses

Depending on when you created your iCloud account, your iCloud email addresses and aliases may end with @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com domains. Learn how these email addresses are granted.

Review these scenarios to see which one applies to you:

    • If you created an iCloud account on or after September 19, 2012, your email address ends with @icloud.com. Learn more about @icloud.com mail addresses.
    • If you created an iCloud account before September 19, 2012, or moved to iCloud with an active MobileMe account before August 1, 2012, you have both @me.com and @icloud.com email addresses.
    • If you had a working @mac.com email address as of July 9, 2008, kept your MobileMe account active, and moved to iCloud before August 1, 2012, you can use @icloud.com, @me.com, and @mac.com email addresses with your iCloud account.
In each case, you can sign in to iCloud with either your @icloud.com email address or the Apple ID that you use with your iCloud account. If you created one or more email aliases for your account, be aware of the following:
    • You can change or delete an email alias, but if you delete an @mac.com or @me.com email alias, you can't add it back to your iCloud account.
    • You can't sign in to iCloud.com with an email alias. Sign in with your @icloud.com email address or the Apple ID that you use with your iCloud account.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.

    Back up all data.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

              Services Reveal

from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.

Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. Any custom stationery that you created may be lost. Ask for instructions if you want to preserve that data. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.

Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

    Linc,

Thank you very much. This solved the problem. You were correct my Mail settings need to be reset but that is a very small price to pay to fixing this.

btw - I went directly to the Library (Finder --> Go --> (hold option key) -->Library-->Containers) and dragged the folder "com.apple.mail" to the desktop. I then did a restart. After the Macs rebooted and after opening Mail (which took a little longer than usual) a new "com.apple.mail" folder appeared.

All of my accounts, inboxes, etc. appear to be unchanged.

Thank you again, and sorry for the confusion.
