Q: outbox very slow; extra accounts in Connection Doctor
In an effort to figure out why mail seems to sit for minutes in the outbox before sending a searched here for a solution. One suggestion is that I use the Mail Connection Doctor.
When I do that I see eight accounts as follows; but in (Sys Pref) Accounts I only have three (a normal account and two aliases)
- Status Name Type Details
- RED one SMTP Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct.
- GRN one@mac.com iCloud IMAP Connection and login to server succeeded.
- GRN two iCloud IMAP Connection and login to server succeeded.
- RED Gmail SMTP Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct.
- RED Gmail SMTP Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct.
- RED smpt.me.com:two SMTP Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct.
- RED smtp.me.com:three SMTP Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct.
- GRN three iCloud IMAP Connection and login to server succeeded.
So, to summarise what I see; each of my three accounts is shown in the green once. Two Gmail accounts (which was deleted from accounts years ago) in the Red The Gmail account still exists, but the password would have changed a few times. Two accounts named "smtp.me" + alias name shown in the Red.
I'm guessing that I've got some old accounts lurking in some setting somewhere. When Mail tries to access these accounts it waits to resolve the status on all accounts before my messages gets sent.
So how can I get rid of these lurking accounts? I'm a basic user, but can use terminal without trepidation!
Many thanks in advance.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. Any custom stationery that you created may be lost. Ask for instructions if you want to preserve that data. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
