    Greetings jimtownrc,

After reading your post, it sounds like you are experiencing an error when attempting to update. You may want to consider restarting the device first, and then resetting if that does not work. This article provides detailed instructions for Restarting, and Reseting:

Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

    How to restart

    1. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
    2. Drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
    3. After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.

    How to reset

    • You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
    • To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

    Best,

    Bobby_D

    Thanks

When she was still under My care, we did that a couple times.   I'm not sure  what the update helps, she is not experiencing any usage  issues, she just asked me about the update and it will not install.  So until she needs it  we'll just ignore it.

    Thanks for the tip.

1.If you use iTunes to do this update,  how do you do that, when i open up  iTunes store there are just all the selections to pick from, i have no idea how to try this under iTunes?   Before the updates have always installed by clicking the update.

    2.  If it's necessary to do a reset, you lose all your data  is that right, pictures etc?

The ipad air is working ok i.m still pondering the update for her.

I did see the usb cord that is in the charger, so i can transfer photos to my pc, or ext hd drive,, she has plenty of free space anyway.

    tks

    jimtownrc,

Resetting a device will not erase data. A "restore" however, is the process of deleteting everything and taking the device back to factory settings.

Here is an article that will explain how to update using a computer:

Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

    Update your device using iTunes

If you can’t update wirelessly, or if you want to update with iTunes, follow these steps:

    1. Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer.
    2. Plug in your device to your computer.
    3. In iTunes, select your device.
    4. In the Summary pane, click Check for Update.
    5. Click Download and Update.

If you don't have enough free space to update using iTunes, you'll need to delete content manually from your device.

Find out what to do if you get other error messages while updating your device.
