Same issue here in Canada with an iphone 6.. no matter what kind of restore or reset completed. Siri, voice to text, front facing video recording with no sound after update from 8.0 to 8.1.x.  Had a **** of a time dealing with a local retail apple store. The floor manager felt he needed to coddle me with "sounds like a software issue to me, just give it a week, I've escalated the issue and I'm confident there will be an update coming soon" even after I explicitly directed him to this thread, and how it appears to be a combination of software for older gen phones and hardware for some ip6 or 6+'s. If it were software alone, why are my family members and friends with iphone 6's not having this issue!? I left more than frustrated, and booked a genius apt for the following Friday, 4 days later. I wasn't going to give up without a fight!

Long story short - in the middle of the week I called apple support, who couldn't believe the response from the manager or that he turned me away, and issued me a phone replacement. I showed up on Friday to the genius apt, triumphant, and had my replacement in hand after I left, which not to my surprise, worked completely fine out of the box on 8.1. Now updated on 8.1.2 and no issues at all. If only the floor manager was on duty.. I had a long winded speech ready for him haha.

Best of luck to all of you select users with the same issue. My advice.. call apple support ahead of time, they seem to be able to escalate and treat a customer like a customer still under warranty.

Finally, after months of Siri working intermittently on my iPhone 6 (running the latest version of iOS 8), I went to a local Apple Store in Arlington, VA. The person at the Genius Bar did a diagnostic and said she found a number of issues which she believed would be fixed if I would let her take the phone in back and wipe it and reinstall the operating system. I had backed my phone up through iTunes im my Mac before leaving home, so I said give it a shot. It took about ten minutes, or so. When she gave it back to me it was like a brand new phone when I turned it on. I then had to go home, connect it to my Mac and then restore it from backup. After the re-store operation, Siri (and other voice functions like dictation) have worked just fine. She explained that wiping the phone clean gets at issues that I'd never have been able to correct on my own at home. For those still having problems, why not go to the Apple Store and ask them to reinstall iOS. Just make a full backup at home first!

Obviously, this shows it was a software issue, not hardware. Those who got replacement phones just got a phone with a fresh install of iOS 8.

Hate to break up your little theory marcopolo... but if you would have done your due diligence and read - as stated in my response, and from many other users in this thread, a restore from the firmware (8.1.2) in dfu mode (what you call a fresh install) did not repair the problem for some of us. So no, those who got a replacement phone didn't just get a fresh install, they got a phone that was not malfunctioning. It is a hardware issue for some and software for others, which is mind boggling in itself.

    My advice still stands.

Do your restore from dfu mode, and if your phone is still showing these symptoms - call support. One thing I found interesting while on the phone with them, they actually verified that I had completed the restore from their end, probably due to the phone reactivating over the server (which is the very first step taken at retail store genius bar apt's).  Support can then further assist you (hear your case) without wasting the "ten minutes of your time or so" or sending you on your merry way still with a defective phone at a retail store.

I had the exact same problem with mine where Siri would not work except it would work on Bluetooth I had changed every setting that I had to be able to make it try and work I've reset my phone countless times reset all the network settings everything didn't work except Bluetooth for Siri I had spoke with Apple they directed me to the store the store gave me a new phone

so call Apple and tell them of your issue because they clearly have no idea this is going on when I spoke to them on every time I spoke with them they had not heard of this issue and they can't fix an issue they don't know exists

This fix worked for me (the soft reset) - - on both my iPhone and iPad the "Talk to Text" or Siri features were not working but this fixed the problem.  It was driving me nuts all of the sudden not being able to dictate texts or emails as opposed to typing.  Thank you for the solution.

So get this: I'm on my FOURTH replacement phone from Apple because of this exact problem. At first I was told it was the rear mic that was defective somehow. Now they're telling me that it's the front mic, the one in the earpiece that does noise cancellation, that's burning out, and that's why Siri can't hear me and neither does dictation. I don't know what to do anymore. It's definitely a software problem I think. Some software is constantly messing with the front mic?

    I have an iPhone 6 Silver 64gig..

    Thoughts?

My situation was resolved when I went through the ordeal over the phone and diagnostics with AppleCare followed by A testy visit to my local Apple store. In my case it was a single replacement of my 5S. My problems began immediately after upgrading from iOS 7 to iOS eight and when I finally got the Apple store to agree to replace the phone, they wanted to give me a new five and install iOS8 over seven which has been installed at the factory. I insisted that they completely wipe the phone and then install iOS eight from scratch. This has resolved the problem for me completely. For two straight weeks it's fine.

what I think is surprising many of us on this thread is that no one at AppleCare and no one in the stores seems to have heard of this problem. Those of you with sixes clearly have not had the situation develop after upgrading from iOS 7 to iOS 8. there are more than 100 different posts on this thread and more than 10,000 views. Unfortunately the company has sold tens of millions of iPhone six so this is just not on their radar.

Here it is, February 2015! and the problem still exists even after having done the latest update 8.1.3.  I have a 2008 Toyota Solara convertible and the iPhone 4s.  I did not have this problem prior to the 8.1 updates.  Is there a way I can go back to the 7.1?

I have the same problem as most in here. Siri/dictation not working, no sound on video from forward camera, voice control when Siri is off works. Facetime has sound on both mics, both front and main camera.

    Device

    Iphone: 5s 64Gb

    Model no: ME440KN/A

    OS version: IOS 8.1.2

    After update: IOS 8.1.3 (12B466)

My Wifi is a fiber modem, so my wifi is normally quite fast.

Cell network is 4G, so also fast.

    General/About :

    Network: Netcom (4G)

    Songs: 3

    Videos: 30

    Images: 4715

    Applications: 670

    Capacity: 56,0GB

    Available 1,4GB

    Version: IOS 8.1.3 (12B466)

    Carrrier: NetCom 18.0

    Model: ME440KN/A

First noticed problems: awhile after updating to iOS8. First problem noticed was lacking sound in a front facing video 2015-01-23. Started researching when attempting  to start using Siri more, and was not able to get it to work. Noticed dictation also gone.

Uncertain when Siri and dictation stopped working.

    Description:

    Problems:

Siri have no connection to microphone, flat line, cannot hear me.

Voice dictation same problem, flat line, no connection to microphone.

Video with front facing camera: no sound!

    No problems:

Video with main camera: Microphone works.

    Telephone: Mic works

    Telephone on speaker: Mic works.

Facetime: Mic works in both directions.

Shutting down Siri: Voice controls works perfectly (can connect to mic, commands recognized). Still no sound on video with front camera.

Read and tried every single solution above in this thread: (”siri not working after ios 8 update” on discussions.apple.com:)

    All 9 pages, from Sep 18 2014 to feb 15 2015.

Me and 124 others have clicked this subject, but the thread has 109259 views, so it is very likely that this is a larger problem.

Attempted solutions, no success so far:

Shut down all apps in background

    Turn off and on again

    Disable voice cancellation

    Reset all settings

    Disable and enable wifi

Disable and enable bluetooth (never used bluetooth earpiece/speaker, only keyboards)

    Soft reset with home+power

    Update to iOS 8.1.3

Turn off Siri, voice control works! No dictation though.

Turn on Siri: No sound input, still flatline.

Checked microphone for dust/debris (which should be rubbish, if blocked voice control would not work)

    Solutions not attempted:

Reset as new device – Since this has worked for ca no one in thread above.

Swype and swiftkey is installed, both could hypothetically have broken Siri. None was available as keyboards after ”reset all settings”. Tried Siri on my iPad with 8.1.2, Works. Swype&Swiftkey not installed as keyboards yet. Tried installing Swype, Siri mic still works. Not probable cause.

Phone purchased online at launch from Norwegian operator Netcom 2013.10.25

Fortunately, in Norway we have 2 years warranty by law, so I contacted my operator, (known for excellent customer service).

Will attempt full delete to have it ruled out, then contact Netcom store tomorrow for repair/replacement.

Unfortunately we have no apple store/genius bar in Norway, and since apples warranty is only 1 year, it is probably no use reporting it to apple.com. Posting here for reference though.

For me it seems the mic is a hardware issue on my 5s, unless Siri gets back online after full reset. (will keep you posted on that.)

After full reset, still no Siri.

Sent in for service via Netcom (Norwegian operator), got new phone after 3 days.

So for me it was a hardware issue.

I had this same problem after I updated. Make sure Siri and dictation is on in the settings and then turn off your phone. Leave it off for a minute then turn it back on, Siri started to respond after that and I got the like 'doot doot' tones again.
