Q: How can Safari request HTML5 videos?

Hi,

Safari on my iPad plays HTML5 videos.

When I go to the video with Safari on my Mac, I got the message Flash PlugIn missing.

How can I configure Safari on my Mac that it requests HTML5 videos?

Thanks

    Hi,

I don't want to use the buggy Flash Player anymore on my Mac.

On my iPad Safari requests and plays HTML5 videos.

How can I configure Safari on my Mac that it does the same?

    Thanks

Hi I found nothing for safari. You could open safari and then click on the safari in the upper left an go to extensions and look through the list.  I understand that google chrome will play HTML5

There are ways to check & see if you can change the default in browser

so HTML5 is available, if supported. Safari should support it...

    Here's an example to obtain

    •HTML5 for YouTube video:

    https://www.youtube.com/html5

HTML5_Test: How well does your browser support HTML5?

    https://html5test.com/

There may be others, but this one allows certain functions in lieu of Flash.

Actually, YouTube supposedly now streams HTML5 video -- by default.

    Good luck & happy computing!

I'm with you, Thomas. I don't want Flash.  I have El Capitan, Safari 10, no plug ins.

YouTube is not streaming HTML5 video by default, because all I get is a window asking me to go to their page which lists browsers that do cope with HTML5. Safari is listed, but does not work on my Mac.  https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/showImage/2-30706960-753129/Sc reenshot+2016-09-25+15.50.19.png

I am being compelled to use Google Chrome, which works a treat.

Not sure what the issue in your instance may be, because HTML#5 has

been supported in Safari for many years, in Mac OS X. Not sure if it

can 'request' them, or if an official plugin from Apple is needed to be

present so it can be 'set to select' such an option with a new default.

(The youtube flash player is not helpful here because it forces Flash.)

For developers, the section about Safari suggests it is fully capable:

    https://developer.apple.com/safari/features/

While I have and use a supported recent version of Safari, my usual

browsers include Firefox 49.x, SeaMonkey (both mozilla code) and

I use both of them more of the time. ~ Also SeaMonkey does email.

Other than the footprint of memory/RAM use, which is higher in Firefox

than Safari, it does OK and has several features plus mozilla add-ons.

Sorry to not be of much help; I'd try Firefox as it has less issues than Chrome

in a modern macOS X. - Chrome can use more system resources than Firefox.

    Good luck & happy trails!

Hello K Shaffer. My idea of purchasing and using a Mac was so that I could get away from Microsoft/Windows. On my 2011 Mac, being informed that Adobe can be malware prone, I am continually trying to avoid it. I updated Safari to 10.0 in El Capitan, and wasn't able to use YouTube video HTML5, unless I used Chrome. For days kept putting off sorting it out - till now. In another discussion, I received a suggestion to disable Flash. In Applications, there was no listing of Flash/Adobe, so I assumed I haven't got it anyway. In Safari>Preferences>Security I did have Flash Player disabled, but had Flash Reader enabled. When Reader was disabled, VOILA. On my previous setup - Dell/Windows I did use Firefox in preference to Windows. Our son,{Graphic Designer} in London, a very long time user of all things Apple, recommended Chrome after Safari, hence I too have both.  Your comments certainly warrant further investigation, and I'll enjoy doing just that. Many thanks for your time, and response.
