Q: I create slide shows to raise monies for charity. Most are with still photos with short video clips and have been using iMovie.  Would like to improve shows and ask if the community would recommend Final Cut Pro for me to do this?

I have a 27inch iMac with 16GB memory and wish to improve and enhance slide shows that I create to raise monies for Cancer Research.  Have lately been using iMovie but get frustrated that I cannot carry out actions with iMovie that I would like to achieve. Mostly the shows are made up from still photos and sometimes short video clips.  I have viewed videos giving information on Final Cut Pro and think it would enable me to achieve the results I want but also I wonder if it is too complicated for shows made mostly from still photographs.  Has any one in the community done what I wish to do with what result?  "Am I thinking of using a large hammer to crack a small nut?"  Any replies very welcome.

The leap to FCPX is big. One makes this decision knowing where one wants to go with one's skills and abilities. If you think having more creative control over your projects' content will help get your audiences to part with more money then, yes, get the app. But this assumes your skills as a photographer, video shooter, storyteller, and editor are, or will grow to be, good enough to use the vast collection of new tools and functions that will become available with your new software. Software doesn't make you a better editor any more than a couple of DSLRs and a car full of glass will make you a photographer (or having a child actually makes you parent).

But you WILL soon want better acquisition equipment, better shooting, and better audio production skills to be able to use FCPX's tools to create better shows.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful reply.  I will think about FCPX some more and probably consider using the trial period that is on offer.

    Thanks again.   John.
