Q: How do I force new notes to use iCloud instead of "On My Mac"?

I'm synching notes between my Macbook Pro and my iPhone but it's driving me a little crazy. When using my macbook, on "All Notes", if I create a new note, it goes into "On My Mac" instead of the iCloud folder. I'm assuming this mean it will never synch with my phone, so I have to manually drag each note to iCloud after I write it. Is anyone else experiencing this problem, or is it normal?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

    Close Notes.app

Go to System Preferences >> iCloud, and deactivate "notes" sync. Wait two minutes and reactivate, will ask you to "merge" notes, now... wait another two minutes and go to Notes.app, you will see only iCloud account.

I tried twice, and waited 5 minutes each time instead of 2. I don't get the "merge" prompt when I re-enable notes. I'm not sure why, but it's late and I'm going to get some sleep. I'll check this thread in the morning.  Thank you

I googled this problem again to hopefully solve it and this thread was the first result, haha. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Make sure you have the iCloud account selected when you create a new note. It will not sync from On My Mac.

The default is "All Notes". For example, every time I close and then re-open Notes, it defaults to "All Notes" being highlighted. If I create a new note, it automatically puts it into "On My Mac" and I have to manually drag it over to iCloud Notes. I would like for every new note I take to just start out and stay in iCloud. I don't want to have to remember to click on iCloud notes before I create a new note, or have to manually move every note from my mac over to the cloud.

Here's a screenshot of what my notes looks like when you open it:

In order to get the merge notes prompt, you must sign out of iCloud, not just uncheck notes in the iCloud preferences. I have not tested this in 10.10.3, but I suppose it works the same as earlier versions of Yosemite.

Also, delete all the user created folders under On My Mac.

As Eric pointed out, if you highlight the Account in the sidebar (iCloud, notes, or any other folder you created under iCloud) before creating a note, you will create the new note there.

It says if I sign out of iCloud, all documents stored in iCloud will be deleted from this Mac.

Does that include all of my 160GB of photos that are in the cloud? It took me forever to upload them all, so if I would have to redownload them after this that would be insane.

If you are referring to the new iCloud Photo Library Storage, I don't know. You won't have to upload them to iCloud again, but I don't know if you will get a prompt to keep what you have stored on the computer. There are different ways to configure what's kept on the computer. I'm not familiar with it and can't answer that.

Documents on iCloud drive will reappear when you log back in. It is not the same as the new iCloud Photo Library. Documents would be like Pages, Numbers. Keynote, or whatever other document you transferred to the iCloud Drive.

It's a scary thought, if it does delete all of the iCloud photos off of  my computer. I have slow internet so I've had to spend weeks at the local college campus letting it run for 8 hours a day to upload these files. I really don't want to have to do all of that again. Maybe I'll just hold off for now. The notes thing is a minor nuisance. Having to redo all of my photos would be a major pain!

Just so you will know. I went ahead and tested it and it worked fine.

I removed all notes from the On My Mac section. Deleted all folders from On My Mac except Notes (would not let me delete it). Signed out of iCloud and removed all information from the computer. When I signed back in, I unchecked all boxes that first came up. Then selected individually each item to enable in iCloud. I did not get the Pop Up to merge information when I enabled Notes (probably because I had none to merge), but notes now only has only the iCloud account on it.

FYI: In order to get the On My Mac back showing in the list, you would once again have to sign out of iCloud, create a local note, then sign back in without merging information. Then the On My Mac account will stay.

    To fix this problem....

I had to go into APPLE MAIL and set SSL on each of my email server IMAP accounts.

NOTE: When I did this, it switched to port 993 on it's own.

Now the problem with Notes has been fixed.
