Whether you know the information is correct or not Google is sure it is not correct. And Google wins every time. Do you have 2 step authentication enabled on your Google account? If so then you need to use an application specific password rather than your authenticated password.

Have you considered using the gmail app, rather than a Google mail account in the iPhone mail app? It works with 2 step authentication and your authenticator app if that's what you are using.

I am having a similar problems with Apple MAIL both on my MAC and iPhone.

I have generated the app specific password for these products (different for MAC and iPhone) but the gmail imap server rejects the passwords when sending mail (MAC) or when setting up (iPhone).

    any thoughts?

    Thanks

Is your password 6 or 8 characters?

If 6, you need to change your password to be 8 or more.

The App Specific password is 16 digits in groups of 4.

Lawrence, bless you.  I was able to use your tip and solve my problem. I did two things in my hotmail account: 1) changed my password; and 2) created an alias.  Running iPhone 5s and iPad Air ios 8.1.  After I did this, my iPhone and iPad which to date had no problems with email, repeatedly prompted Cannot Get Mail.... etc.  After two calls to Apple, I used this thread and realized that while I was in my hotmail, reading about security, I must have selected two-step verification.  After reading info in this string I was certain that the two-step verification was the issue.  I hung up with Apple and was able to get to security in hotmail.  What appeared on the screen was Turn Off Two-Step Verification.  Which meant I had implemented the two-step process without remembering. Bottom Line, read your options in security carefully.  If you have the option to turn something off, sometimes it means that it is currently turned on.   I was immediately able to add my original email and password and my iPhone was able to verify account....VOILA!  Thank you, Lawrence and all who are willing to delve into issues in this and other forums.  A great way to lend a helping hand to one another.  Oh, happy Day!

I had the same problem after getting my iphone6.  It seemed to work after I turned off 2-step verification in my Gmail account.
