Jan 2, 2012 8:24 PM in response to flinhartby Allan Eckert,Yes. Clone system disk to external with either CCC or SuperDuper.
Boot from clone erase internal disk.
Restore clone from external to internal.
Fast and cheap.
I would not hold my breath over the performance improvement. It will most likely be hardly noticable at best.

Jan 2, 2012 8:30 PM in response to flinhartby Rysz,As Allan stated, defrag will make little difference in performance. Mac OS X takes pretty good care of itself and defrags as it writes. If you have sufficient space left on the hard drive, what will make a real difference is adding RAM.

Jan 2, 2012 11:35 PM in response to flinhartby Chamar,I use Drive Genius 3 to defrag the discs on my iMace periodically. It only makes a slight difference in performance.

Jan 3, 2012 1:46 AM in response to flinhartby noondaywitch,Unless you're creating and deleting large files regularly (like movie or audio editing) the cause of your slow down is unlikely to be fragmentation.
Check how much HD space you have left ("xxGB available" at the bottom of any Finder window). If that's approaching 5GB (more if you use memory intensive apps, and depending on installed RAM - can be problems with as much as 30GB available).
edit;
If you do feel the need to defrag, the clone > erase > reverse clone is the safest and cheapest, and defrags not just files, but the space between them.
