Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

    Hello guys,

Yesterday I saw those news, that Apple is initiating a Repair Program for some Macbook models that have video problems. This doesn't cover our problem, but the good news is that Apple listened to these customers and responded as expected.

Now, we are already 13 in our Group, please join us as together we are a much stronger voice to raise this to corporate Apple:

    *******

As soon as we are more (around 50), I personally will start contacting Apple employees via social networks until they do a Repair Program for our problem too, as this is clearly a design problem.

Please share this URL so we are all together in one place and can contact Apple as a group and not as individuals.

    Thanks!

    Eduardo

    Good news guys:

    http://www.golem.de/news/apple-macbooks-mit-grafikproblemen-werden-doch-kostenlo s-repariert-1502-112489.html

Apple repair all MacBookPro, built in 2011 till 2013 with graphic issues. After a long time, Apple stayed to her production bug and this was the reason, that they make it for free, also for devices which aren't under warranty.

And in the news articles was a hint that the Apple Discussion board has a really long thread over 100 sites about the issue. Maybe some day we have the same solution from Apple.

I just came back from the Apple Store. The guy at the Genius bar offered me immediately a repair for free even though my Macbook was out of warranty. But he said it is an exception that he made with an approval of his manager. The whole process took no longer than 5 minutes and I will be informed later today to pick up my device.

I also asked him if this is a known issue and he said that he has seen it before as well. I really think it depends on the employee that will assist you and if he is willing to help you or not.

I have a very similar problem! When I had taken my MacBook Pro Retina 15.4-inch - Mid 2012 into the Apple Store for a scheduled appointment on another service related issue, the Genius bar told me that I could clean my screen with either their product or with a micro-fiber cloth dampened with water and a little bit of alcohol.  The first time I tried this at home, I did just as instructed. I did not wet the cloth, only dampened and did not apply any type of hard pressure! I was MORTIFIED when I started to see these spots on my screen!!! How could this have happened if a representative from Apple was recommending to customers to clean their screens this way?  This is my very first Mac computer! From what I have read about others experiencing the same problem with no results and/or only a select few getting theirs fixed, really makes me sick to my stomach.  I can't afford $1,000 to fix!!! HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Hi guys, I have the exact same problem, lucky i searched for it here and can see this issue is gaining momentum.

I have a MBPR 13" Late 2013, and it appears many people also have models from around this same time.

I've also only been using the black Apple cloth suppplied with it, and water (as recommended).  I hardly ever put it in a bag, and when I do, there's a separate compartment for it that make it impossible for anything to put pressure on it.  My issue is permanent stains from the keyboard and trackpad (all around the central part of the screen, although I'm also getting a few patches around the bezel.

I've signed the petition, joined the facebook group, and will add myself to that wufoo database.  This really is becoming a big issue and, if we band together, we should be able to get Apple to fix this issue (especailly as the screen is one of the main selling points of the

Having paid £1700+ for this premium laptop, it's a huge 'smack in da face' for the screen to get so ugly without any reason.  Apple needs to fix this issue as none of my other laptops ever suffered from scratches or permanent stains that appear during everday normal use.

There should be a legal case here (class action?) because this is not normal 'wear and tear', this is a defective coating.

Let's keep the momentum going guys

    Hi Jakaya,

Totally, in the Database (Wufoo form) we are already 19 signed up in just one day.

I will wait during the weekend to see how many additional people can sign up and on Monday I'll personally start contacting people at Apple.

Totally agree with you, let's keep the momentum.

In case anybody is arriving at this thread for the first time, here's the URL of the database of people with same problem: *****

I have a very similar problem on my Macbook Pro 13" retina display (late 2013) bought on Jan2014.

Started only 11 month after I purchased the laptop.

It started like small "bubble" on the left bottom corner and then spreaded all over the screen.
Also I have keyboard mark on my screen like other posted here.
I'm cleaning always my screen and keyboard and working only with clean hands.
It looks like retina coating damaged very easily with normal use.

Unfortunately my warranty already expired   and it cost of a lot of money to replace the screen.

I hope Apple will see how their premium products look like and will treat its customers.

I'm very sad that I suggested to my friends to by Macbook retina.

yeah i agree, it costs a lot to replace, nearly 1/3 - 1/2 of the whole machine. And for a 'premium' product, it's crazy that it deteriorates so quickly.  This isn't normal 'wear and tear'

People think that when they  buy Apple products they are buying into the consummate corporate world of quality.  Apple's stonewalling behavior is solely for the benefit of Apple's profit and to the practical and emotional distress of it customers who bought their greatest new product - THE RETINA.

I now own 2 apple retina laptops.  I regret becoming part of the apple world and in the future will boycott apple.  Samsung phones and PC's here i come.  at the very least i can by a replacement battery for my PC for $60 and not $200 and a power cord for $15 and not $85.  It will feel good to stop getting ripped off by paying 500% for the cost of an accessory.

here's my screen.  It started about 6 months ago at the section across the center between the trackpad and spacebar (right across the middle of my screen!!) but its been spreading faster the past month to be above quite a few of the keys and down the left-hand side of the trackpad.  And I can't stop it, it's like a cancer spreading across my screen.

I'm only using water and microfibre cloth, which is actually a crap way to clean it because you can see that it just spreads the dust / grease around the screen.  And I hardly take it anywhere.  What gets me is why they make the screen SO **** sensitive.  I used to use screen cleaners on my other laptops and TVs, which obviously does a great job of removing everything.  But with these premium screens, you have to treat them like an egg shell.

Jony Ive, in his pursuit of making things look nice, has forgotten that we need to use these for many hours every day.  The screen should have tough gorilla glass, or whatever is used on iPads and iPhones.  Imagine this screen was used on an iPad/Phone, it would be scratched to pieces in a day  I wouldn't mind a few extra millimeters on a MacBook it meant that the screen could be used in a 'normal' way.  It's like they expect us to store these in a glass case and only handle it with gloves.

Jony Ive and the rest of the design team (and everyone else at Apple) must also realise that these retina screens are overly sensitive for an everyday machine.  Makes me think that they must get their screens replaced free of charge every 6 months.

It's got to be something to do with the coating as someone mentioned before (the production manager guy).  But why, even now, can't they use the same screens as the iPad.  My 7 year old Compaq laptop doesn't have any marks on the screen at all, and that traveled to many countries with me.

(the photos uploaded upside-down for some reason)

We need to get more people, who have the same problem, to join us, and put pressure on Apple.  This is such a ridiculous situation for a tool that we use every day.

We should look to get some legal advice, and also advice from more production engineers.  And some media attention, like what caused Apple to fix the video card issue in MBPR 15's recently. This is DEFINITELY a manufacturing defect.  I feel entirely ripped off for this and am also considering moving back to PC if they can't resolve this obvious problem.
