Q: Am I required to Pay?

On a win 8.1 OS.  ITunes asked me to upgrade from 11.8 to 12.  I declined.  Pop Up window then asked me to pay $24.99 per year to access ALL my music in Apple's Cloud (even the 1,000 cds I uploaded).  I declined.  Now Itunes only shows me a cloud icon near the type of media pull down menu.  Will not show any of the cd/music I have on my external hard drive. Is apple now requiring me to pay to rent all the music I've had in all my Ipods since 2004?  I'm signed into the itunes store.  How do I get out of Apple's Cloud?

    When you sign up for iCloud, you automatically get 5 GB of free storage. If you need more storage, you can upgrade to a larger storage plan.

    If your library doesn't show the content you expect it to see Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash.

     

    If you have previously subscribed to iTunes Match but don't wish to renew then you can cancel any auto-renewal setting and let it expire. You should be sure to download local copies of all media (and back them up) beforehand. When the subscription expires you can no longer download the matched items, but your purchases remain. Your local library should be unaffected.

    I never signed up for icloud?  could someone else have done this?

    I suspect you were essentially seeing a pop-up ad (for iTunes Match) as a side effect of iTunes starting up with an empty library. Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash should sort you out.

    What you are being asked to renew is 'iTunes Match', which has nothing to do with iCloud.

     

    Without iTunes Match, you can add music to iTunes not purchased in the iTunes Store, for example by copying in from CDs you have bought. These songs are then only available on that machine unless you copy them manually to other devices.

     

    iTunes Match makes versions of these songs available online, in 'the Cloud' (not iCloud) by finding equivalents in the iTunes Store, or if it can't, uploading your own copies. Then you can access these songs immediately from other devices.

     

    If you have been using iTunes Match and you don't renew it, then the online copies of the songs will not longer be available. The copies you made in iTunes itself originally will continue to exist there, it's just that they won't be accessible to other devices. Purchased songs can be downloaded to other devices anyway, that isn't part of iTunes Match.

    So though I declined I-Match when the pop window asked me somehow I must have this Match thing since I see it at the top of the I tunes app?  How do I remove it?

    Do you mean like this:

    This is 'iTunes in the Cloud' which is free and applies only to music purchased in the Store - you will see there that the download icon applied only to the purchased items. You can remove that display in Preferences>Store - uncheck 'Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases'. If what you are seeing is actually iTunes Match I can't answer that as I don't use it - perhaps the warning runs ahead of the actual expiry date to give you time to renew without a gap?
