Q: Do you connect Time Capsule's ethernet to modem's WAN or LAN port?

I have a Zyxel VMG4325-810A modem. It has a WAN port and four LAN ports. I want to use the Time Capsule to create a network.

I connected the TC to the WAN and was informed the TC had no ethernet connection; it could not connect to the internet. Connected to the modem's LAN port, it creates a network, but  streaming music from Pandora is interrupted every few minutes.   Since my DSL Upload averages >2 Mbps and download average speed is above 12 Mbps, that does not seem reasonable..

To create a network, Do I connect ethernet cable from the Time Capsule's WAN port to the modem's WAN or LAN port?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Always LAN on modem to WAN on the TC.. never the other way around.

But many modems now have multiple WAN ports.. some can be allocated to wan or lan.. but in your case where the connection failed clearly you must use WAN.

streaming music from Pandora is interrupted every few minutes

Completely remove the TC.. does music from Pandora still stop every few minutes??

You really need to answer that one before we can proceed to troubleshoot the connection.

Thank you. I just shut down the TC. It's only been a couple minutes; I'll respond again after a bit moe time.

We've gone from a connection of 3Mbps up and 1 down, to 10-12 down and 1 up, to the 12down, 2up, just yesterday, which required two DSL phone lines, each delivering 6 megs down and 1 up. We've had constant drops that my ISP said was not on their end and might be fixed with 2 meg up instead of 1. We have around 8 or 9 devices connected; ISP says we're heavy users and Apple devices use more bandwidth than others. But all we stream is music, sometimes videos on iPads, never TV movies.

Well, it still hasn't dropped in the house; I just ran up to my shop to see if I was still streaming music there as well as in the great room; I am, and that iPod actually changed networks when I shut down the TC net. So it may be in my configuration of the TC.

I get better speed  in my shop, 100 plus feet away, with the TC, but the music's still playing. I'd like to use the TC because it seems to have a better range, but I don't know how to determine that. I'm looking for software that will monitor my whole LAN, telling me how much data, and what deviceis using up bandwidth. Can't find it for Mac, only Windows...

It hasn't dropped; been nearly half an hour now.

Are these combined into one network, using a dual wan router or kept as two different connections.. because linking is not easy.. did you ISP do a bonded connection with specialized equipment??

Anyway it seems like the problem is the TC.

Ok.. so with no TC running all is good. Pretty strongly points to TC issue.

What model exactly is your TC?

If it is the latest one.. it can be troublesome on the WAN port.. as can the older ones using 7.6.4 firmware.

So I would advise if you use bridge mode for TC setup.. plug from the modem LAN to the TC LAN port not WAN.. it is possible in this setup to use any LAN port.. so test all three.

The TC must create a wireless network and it should be setup to not interfere with existing wireless.. so I recommend fixed channels and even use two different names for the two bands as a way of reducing the amount of swapping going on.. fix the main router wireless as well.. they will normally only use 2.4ghz.. so set one to say channel 1 and the other other to 11.. that gives the best separation.

I'm looking for software that will monitor my whole LAN, telling me how much data, and what deviceis using up bandwidth. Can't find it for Mac, only Windows...

If your TC is Gen4 or earlier PeakHour works very well. And as long as the modem is also the router.. it will not matter so much even with Gen5 TC.

Apple removed SNMP from Gen5 hardware for no known reason.

Tracking usage and bandwidth is my speciality.. and I strongly recommend Gargoyle firmware on a Netgear WNDR3800 .. or Dlink DIR-835 .. both are pretty well equivalent.. and pick even a second hand WNDR3800 can be cheap.. I cannot even give you the URL to gargoyle otherwise Apple deletes my post.. but just google.. Or email me.. it is open in the profile.

It might be a complex setup.. but you have such a limited internet bandwidth you should go to great lengths to protect it.. the advantage of gargoyle is setting quota and throttles.

I've been trying to buy Peak Hour from the app store for half an hour, and there is a recurring error signing in. At least they haven't closed my account. Thank you. I'll get back.

I didn't think my band width was so limited with >12 Mbps... Maybe my ISP is right: I'm a heavy user? You been working with some BIG LANs. I'll check out Gargoyle, but it looks like Peak Hour will give me what I want, although apparently it doesn't yet have History. Coming soon...

Downloaded Peak Hour. It crashed multiple times. Got a response from developer with a link to downloading v3. Have it running now, but seems to have a problem. Won't complete a scan. Assuming that gets fixed, I think it will be all I need, but I will check out  Netgear WNDR3800 with Gargoyle. Really appreciate your help. I've spent all my time for over a week trying to get these wireless problem fixed. Just can't get along without a good internet connection. I really prefer creating Art of the Lathe in my shop.

Your email is not visible; I tried to me make mine visible to registered users, but it doesn't seem to have any effect.

Just learned from Peak Hour that it does not not monitor IOS devices. "PeakHour monitors compatible devices - that is, those that support SNMP or UPnP. You generally can’t monitor iPods, iPads etc directly as there isn’t a way to make them support SNMP." My LAN is all Apple devices (except routers and printers), mostly IOS stuff & Apple TV, could be >15  devices. Usually 10 or 12.

Checked out Gargoyle. My router, ZyXel VMG4325-B10A, is not supported. My extender, a ZyXel WAP3205v2 might be supported, but I don't think using it would monitor the whole LAN, just what it served. Although there is only one network... Maybe it would. But I'd need to be certain it wouldn't be destroyed before I installed firmware.

Got the LAN working. Went into Time Capsule settings and kept changing them until Airport Utility said it was good. And it seems to be. Haven't dropped Pandora all day and I'm streaming music on three devices. My shop gets dropped; its a hundred feet away. Even with the extender. In two minutes testing, ranged from 600 kbps to 10 Mbps... But I can live with that... Can't hear it anyway when I'm on the table saw or lathe.
