Q: I just purchased a Thunderbolt Display for use with Photoshop work. How can I set up to show/work in separate programs on each screen?

I just purchased a Thunderbolt Display as an additional screen for Photoshop work. Following set up instructions appears to allow only mirroring of the screens. How can I set up to show/work in separate programs on each screen?

A:

You should not check mirror. What you describe as your need is extended desktop. System Preferences / Displays / Arrangement brings up something like this.

You can move the blue rectangles as you please. In the image shown, the screen on the left has the menu bar - the white strip at the top.

Thanks for your reply. I've read the article but perhaps I'm not understanding. The article appears to say that I merely need to drag one screen to another monitor to work in separate windows. I have this capability on my work screens so am not getting why this isn't working here. When I check 'Mirror Image' in display, it does just that, shows the same screen on both. Moving the displayed screen to one or the other monitors just stacks displayed windows rather than allowing me to view separate screens. Clicking to bring one to the top just mirrors on the other. If Mirror isn't checked my Dock doesn't display on the Thunderbolt and the cursor does not move between screens.

Thank-you! I assume the blue screens represent each screen. One other question is why would I want to move the rectangles?

Yes, each blue rectangle is a screen. You can create different geometries, to suit your needs. For example, you can even make this kind of thing... :
