Because it does not have an Eject button!!

Seriously, though, it depends on how long it takes for OS X to load or detect the Disc Info. Some discs in OS X are not recognized, get stuck in a loop, so to speak and won't mount. Those require a Restart and holding the Eject button on your keyboard while starting up at the chime. Command + E is another method or holding F12. Terminal Command line: /usr/bin/drutil eject. Some discs may be slightly warped. Running your fingernail  along and in between the pads in the slot works on the stuck ones as well. Also, don't forget to check Force Quit. An App may still be running in the background holding your Disc from being ejected.

Otherwise, I have a SuperDrive on my Mini and works great in OS X and works for my Boot Camped Windows 7 Pro as well.

Thanks, jndupuis1, but I guess my question wasn't clear. I can run some of my cds and dvds just fine while others (which I recently used) are ejected without being recognized. Some of my oldest cds play fine while others (like my Apple OSX install disk) are ejected. I updated the firmware and don't know what else to do.

There are other issues that can cause this. Simply, first, make sure your disc isn't scratched. May be dirty, you can use a can of air to blow out your SuperDrive. Check Finder Preferences and delete if necessary. Check Disk Utility to make sure there are no mounted media in SuperDrive. Quit all open Apps. Check Force Quit to make sure you have no Apps running in the background.

Lastly, you may do an NPRAM/Pram Reset and SMC Reset

Get help with the slot-loading SuperDrive on your Mac computer - Apple Support

Check Apple Support on how to do an NPRAM and SMC Reset on your Mac Product.

This may be solutions before going to the Apple Store. I understand the Apple Store does not charge for Diagnostic.

Your post somehow found its way to a little-viewed forum for Apple hardware made before 1998. If you tell us what Apple product the Superdrive is used in, we can ask the Hosts to move you to a more active and appropriate forum for your product.

Thanks! I just returned from the Genius Bar where my Super Drive was replaced under the warranty. Thanks to Mr Jones and Mr Dupuis for your helpful suggestions!

Anytime my friend. My only frustration with the SuperDrive is no pin hole for manual eject or an eject button on the device itself. Otherwise, it works good. Take care.
