Q: My 3G has suddenly stopped receiving calls and messages.  The 'Do not disturb" is off. I tried doing a reset, but that did not help.  Any ideas of what I can do now please!

My 3G iPhone has suddenly stopped receiving calls and messages.  The 'Do not Disturb' is off.  I have done a reset, but that has not helped.  At the time the phone was charged, and has airtime.  The only thing that changed was that I had it on silent as I was in hospital.

calls and SMS are coming and going via the phone connection: is the signal of the phone network strong enough?

you can also take the sim card out and then in again and put your passowrd in,  and then see if it connects better.

The signal strength is great, so that is not the problem.  I have taken the sim card out - now more than once - but that changed nothing.  I also tried putting the airplane mode on and off - nothing.  I have never used a password, so that would not make a difference.

Having spent hours googling I am under the impression that it is the do not disturb bit, as I can make calls and send messages.  I have changed the time for dnd to midnight and to return to normal 3 minutes later, but that has not helped either.  I also tried putting dnd on as well as off, but, using my husband's phone to call my phone it still goes through to voicemail.

With "reset" you mean hold the power and home buttons at the same time until you see the white apple logo appear? If not do this.

When it is the dnd : a moon icon will be visible in the statusbar when a message or call arrives.

When it is not the dnd check the accessibility settings, the message settings.

I had reset it doing exactly what you said, and have just done that again.  There is no moon icon on the status bar.  I have now checked the accessibility settings and everything except is off except the home-click speed and incoming calls which are on default. iMessage is off, MMS messaging on and subject field and character count are off.

I am really at my wits end and it is not helped by the fact that I have very grey hair!   Any other ideas?

When there is no moon icon it is not the dnd, as you expected already.

I have an old 3G here, I think, let me search, I will be back in a few minutes.

Found it, old 3G still working, could not find a solution, but could not try all because it needs a large Sim card which we do not have, nowhere here in the area I could find someone with a large sim card (sunday 20:20).

I do not have any other ideas.

I hope some one with more experience in iPhone comes on.

Also start  a new thread also with "iPhone suddenly stopped receiving calls and messages"

and in the message itself explain more. Maybe there is more support available when you have two threads running

Personally I think a visit to the Apple Genius might be necessary.

Just to clarify, are you getting any indications of missed calls? Is there anything in the Recent call log?

I seem to recall hearing something similar but generally, toggling Airplane mode has been the fix. Between you and Lex, you seem to have covered most of the troubleshooting basics. The only thing I can think of that you haven't done is resetting network settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. You will lose any saved WiFi passwords.

Apologies if I've got the reset directions wrong. I don't have a device with that old an operating system. Lex, am I close?

My first iPhone was a 4 and I've long since sold it. Have a good evening!

Thank you for your comments.  I transferred my simcard to an old LG phone that I have, and I am still not getting calls or messages.   I am now thinking that it has to be a fault with the card, so am off to purchase another one today.

Hopefully that will sort out my problems!
