Q: fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related

I've been having a lot of what seem to be kernel panics, usually while watching/forwarding flash videos (e.g. on youtube) and or toggling between full screen or not or using Adobe Bridge and toggling between full screen or not.

What happens is that the screen goes blank (if I hit the keyboard I hear dinging sounds) and the screen goes blank, and I have to force a power off/on.

This has happened as often as 10 times a day.

I took my computer into the apple store, they ran their extended diagnostics and found nothing.  The tech said it could be a logic board error, but because all the logs in the console were kernel panics he suspected it was the OS.

I reformatted the drive, reinstalled the OS and it ran fine for a day or so with minimal new software, including on youtube etc.

But today, I installed more software (Photoshop CC, a java based game, some extentions to firefox, and I experienced two panics today while viewing flash video.).

Anyone have any ideas?

I'd hate to shell out for a logic board replacement since I'm out of warrenty (just).

Thanks!!!

FYI, I'm going to be leaving this tread since I no longer suffer this problem. I was fortunate enough to have my system crash and was able to take it to the Apple Genius bar in that state. They diagnosed the failure right there, ordered a replacement logic board and I have not experienced this problem since the replacement.

I recommend doing the same if you can.

I had similar issues as everyone else is talking about and I posted about it in the thread a few months back. Basically, my logic board was replaced 2x (thankfully while under warranty). When the problems re-surfaced a third time, they ended up just giving me a new MBPr. New one hasn't caused any issues.

I confirm I'm having exact the same issue as all of you. For those of you who don't know how to reproduce the panic in front of Geniuses I know the way which 100% leads to crash. Just get this 3D benchmark https://unigine.com/products/heaven/download/ and runt the test. I did 'Basic' one. In about 30 seconds after starting the benchmark the system crashes with GPU panic. That happens in 100% cases for me.

I downloaded the program from gfx.io.  I make sure I am always using the integrated  GPU and the crashes of stopped for the most part. At least it does not crash everytime I fire up Google Earth or Picasa, etc... Apple really ***** for not addressing this wide spread problem.

    Hi everyone,

I got exactly the same problem as most people here, let me explain a good solution if you are out of apple care and apple is trying to charge you 600$ to replace the logic board.

First understand the problem, due to heat and usage your graphic card gets its solder balls damaged they crack a bit. So when it heats to much information cant pass, or doesn't pass at all if the solder ball is completly cracked.

So here are 2 fixes you can do.

Number 1 is to get someone that is well equipped to reball the GPU, search reballing. You cant really do it yourself.

Solution number 2 witch I did and Now have my macbook pro working for a month is a GPU reflow. This meens you heat your GPU untill the solder balls remelt and get rid of the cracks. This is a temporary solution as sometimes other factors made the balls crack and this will just happen again. But depending on your case and how well you have reflowed your chip you might never have to do it again. And for me even if I have to do it every 6 months, I prefer this then paying 600$. So If you are patient by yourself a good heat gun a set of torx screwdrivers then do a google research on how to dissemble your mac and how to reflow your gpu.

Take your time don't damage any other components and if the reflow fail you can still go to apple and get then logic board replace done.

Just take your time not to mess up anything else.

And do a good research on how much heat, how long, what distance, etc

    Good luck

Nevermind I went through all this for nothing, as of yesterday they have acknowledge the errors and are replacing the units free of charge

    http://www.apple.com/ca/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

Anyway its good stuff to know. On any system when your GPU or CPU fails try a reflow.

My mid-2012 Macbook Pro Retina started having this exact same issue about a month ago. It was very frustrating since it would crash when running higher-intensity applications (e.g. Unity). It also seemed to be heating up much more and more frequently than usual.

I took it into the Apple store this past Sunday (the 22nd). The guy there had said in the worst case I'd have to get it sent to a repair center and pay the flat fee for replacing whatever faulty parts there are. He also said it was possible it would wipe my computer. On the 23rd they did extensive testing on it. On the 24th they shipped it out to the repair facility. On the 25th it was repaired and they shipped it back. I got it back today, the 26th, so the turnaround time was much shorter than expected.

I haven't used it that much so far but it's not nearly as hot as it used to get. Also they didn't wipe my hard drive (just a few small user preferences had been reset). I'm also extremely happy that they actually repaired it for free! I'm pretty sure it was covered under the same program thing the last poster linked to. Pretty funny that I started experiencing these problems only a few weeks before their free-repair program started. I'm also fairly certain that before the repair I only had an Nvidia graphics card; now I have both an Intel and Nvidia graphics card at least according to my system report.

If you qualify for that free repair and are having these issues, definitely take it in for repair. They are really helpful and it didn't take very much time at all for it to be fixed, and best of all, it was free. I'm really happy with the customer support on this one.

I just brought my MBP to an Apple Store and asked for it to be repaired under the new program.  The tech ran their diagnostic software, withing a few seconds it popped up and said "REPLACE SYSTEM BOARD"

Filled out some paperwork and left it with them. I should have it back in less than two weeks.  I am happy Apple finally addressed this issue.

Sorry for my belated update. I just want you all to know that the issue is covered by apple thus your not supposed to pay for the replacement of the logic board. Apple has obviously taken responsibility with this production fault.

If you live within EU your eligible to a full no charge replacement of the board for 3 years from the day you bought it, although you need to provide a receipt form the purchase.

Fortunately I already got mine fixed for free but it's good to see Apple finally opening the floodgates.

Unfortunately Apple did not address all MBPs with the discussed symptoms.

My MBP (15" Mid 2012, with matte screen, 2.6 Ghz Intel Core i7 and Intel HD Graphics 4000) has all the symptoms, but Apple refuses to replace the logic board !!!

I was told by a genius that it is not covered by the program. I was offered to pay >700 CAD for replacing the logic board and ..... only 3 months warranty for the new logic board.

    Do I have other options?

    Hi,

I have the Retina Macbook Pro Mid 2012 and I am experiencing the same issues. Compete freeze. Grey screen with some message like "something unexpected has happened... reboot your computer" or something like that. When I attempt to reboot however, the OS (Yosemite) white line gets half way along and then stops. The only way I have found to recover is to reinstall the OS from the Recovery disk!! This has occured twice in the last couple of weeks.

I took to the apple store and they want to see video evidence of this before they replace hardware.

    So Question:

Is there any way to force the crash as I would like to force recreate the problem under test conditions and not working on something critical?

I had to take mine into the Apple Store, and it was a hardware problem.  I tried all of the other fixes, and nothing worked.

I used the "Depot Service" program, and it cost $300 to fix, but that's better than what the actual parts cost.  I needed the computer for work.  They replaced EVERYTHING on the machine except the keyboard...maybe the hard drive.  It was a much bigger issue than expected, but I feel like they took good care of me.

I think they do need to have a repair program in place for this....this is definitely a flaw in the hardware somewhere, and a computer this expensive shouldn't need to be repaired like this at two years old.  My other Mac laptops have lasted longer.

    2012 13" MBP Retina.

Has has about 20+ kernel panics ONLY after the Recovery update right before the 10.10.3 update.

Took to the Apple store. All hardware ok. He thought maybe the graphics card, which of course, means a new logic board. Have been on enough other threads to know this fixes nothing. Have done the hardware and memory tests. All passed.

Since this has only started AFTER the 10.10.3 update, I'd have to call foul on it being hardware related. Have had 2 kernel panics since I did a clean install of the OS.
