Q: Can G4 i pod talk to modern car audio? (usb)

I have an older ipod (Generation 4 I think, 20GB, c.2005) and a new car audio system, with a usb socket.

The car audio tells me that it knows that it is an i pod, and charges it, but says it doesn't support it, and it won't play music through the usb. It'll play the music using the aux input (mini din) no problem, but that (of course) doesn't give me the track details or other controls.

I'm sure I'm asking too much - but is there any way of persuading the old iPod to talk to the SmartAudioCentre? I'm guessing it's a hardware non-compatibility because the audio system tells me it accepts the i pod format - but could it be the version of iTunes on the old  iPod? (I think this is iTunes 10, at least that is the version on the PC).

Any thoughts?

It will more than likely be the car audio specifications, the stereo only supports up to a certain age of apple devices. Im sure you can probably find out what generation your stereo supports in the car audio manual of my contact the manufacturer
