The most common cause these days is from accidentally installing some form of Genieo. dominic23has directed you to the right place, but start with the Adware Removal Guide : Genieo.

I was having the same problem, and the link in Bojidada's last post was easy to follow, and fixed my problem completely. Thanks so much dominic23, no more stress about this one!

This is a relatively old thread, so in case anybody else stumbles upon it, effective today there is an even easier solution available at TheSafeMac with thomas_r.'s Adware Removal Tool.

I have seen and read many suggestions for this problem by well-intentioned users, all of which however were of no help. The issue of pop ups on Safari may be resolved by getting on the phone with Apple Tech Support where they can walk you through the deletion of many intricate plugins located throughout your computer. And I also learned NOT to click on any requests for "Updating Adobe Flashplayer". Adobe does not send them! Good luck!

I tried all.  Non worked until I when to YouTube.com.  Type in "remove adware from a mac (how to) by David A. Cox".  You will load a program, AdwareMedic. Free software, simple to us and works.  Thanks David.

Why would you post this to a problem that is marked as solved almost a year ago?

AdwareMedic wasn't available back then, but it now does everything that those manual instructions and the Adware Removal Tool did back then and it's from the same author.
