Q: remote won't work

i switch on the apple tv and its not connected to the internet and gives me a green computer icon and a grey setting icon. computer is highlighted, but i can't scroll to settings, and i can't select computer..

when i push a button on the remote the apple tv flashes so its working, but i can't get anywhere..

its about to put a hole in my wall!!!
