Q: ATV 3 Version 7.0 Home Sharing not woking with Yosemite and  iTunes 12

Home Sharing from my Apple TV 3 (A1469) with software 7.0 is not working from the library on my MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) with OS X Yosemite 10.10, Airplay still works but its annoying to have to choose a Song/Movie/TV show from my MBP and then Airplay it to the ATV. Much preferred how well Home Sharing worked.

- I have both devices signed in to the same Apple ID.

- Have tired turning Home Sharing off and on

- Have restored the Apple TV

Using all devices on the same 5G wifi network (Huawei HG659b)

Most annoying thing is it was working perfectly before iTunes 12 was released.

Has anyone else discovered this problem? Does Apple or anyone have a fix?

Please HELP!

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10), Yosemite 10.10

This fixed my same problem too!

I NEVER would have tried this option!

    Thanks very much!

Thanks for the suggestion, but alas it did not work for me.

What at did work was Vantas suggestion to go to the System Preferences->Sharing and change the name of the computer.

I can confirm that this also worked for me!

    It's very weird though:

In Itunes going to Itunes->Preferences->Sharing home sharing was ON

But. When I did File->Home Sharing there was an option Turn Home Sharing On, as if it were turned off.

So I clicked that and logged in, and now it's working!

Seriously, I tried everything in this post.

I thought Vants fix worked, because I saw the airplay sign back on my bar on the top.

But when I try to go to my itunes library on my apple TV I get the warning that I have to turn

on homesharing, and Itunes, and that I have to be on the same network. And al those thing are

    what they're suppose to be.

So anyone another option? Please, because it's driving me insane...

Changing the name of my Mac book air did not work for me. The following worked for me

    1. Turn off fire wall on macbook air in settings--> network

    2. Start up iTunes

    3. Turn on Apple TV

    4. Turn off home sharing in iTunes

    5. Turn on home sharing in iTunes again

    6. Go to computers on Apple TV

    7. Home Sharing should be working now

    8. After Library is loaded, turn on Firewall in Settings

    9. Works fine afterwards also after restarting iTunes and/or Apple TV

Even tried this one, even though it wasn't a response to my post.

    But this doesn't work either.

I have an appointment with apple this afternoon, hopefully they can

    help! It's very frustrating...

Apple! Vant's post should come up #1 in Google search! Get this out there. It will save folks a lot of time. Who knew Yosemite would rename your computer when it upgraded?

Thanks Vants!! Saved me a tone of time!

157 replies and counting, clearly Apple is not paying attention to this issue which is affecting many.

    I have 2 apple tv, where 1 works and 1 doesn't.

Home Sharing is the most consistently broken feature of the Apple product eco-system.  I think this is intentional.  They don't get paid for home sharing, unlike their iTunes store which amazingly works consistently from every Apple device I own.

Changing the name of your computer is a pathetic hack, it might work, but I wouldn't expect it to be a consistent solution.  What happens next time they update one component of this system and we all lose home sharing again?  Change the computer name again?

The real take away here is that we consumers should stop buying apple TV's until they provide the features they advertise.  Or, I know this is crazy talk, but it would be nice for Apple to acknowledge this issue and put some people on to the task.  You know, provide us the functionality the sold us.

So I just ran into this issue about an hour ago. My Macbook Pro couldn't find my Apple TV 3rd Generation anymore, my iPhone and iPad couldn't either.

At first I thought it was a problem with Home Sharing, so I logged out and back in on several occasions on all devices... Didn't work. I reset my modem and router, and even removed security settings on my router... Didn't work. I even restarted my computer... Yes, didn't work.

Then I thought, I had an issue with the modem a few days ago and needed to switch the cable; somehow, the problem must be on the Apple TV side (and that's why none of my devices can see it... not even the Remote app on iPhone). So! On the Apple TV I went to Settings, General, Restart... And this fixed my issue. All back to normal.

Turning the Apple TV "off" didn't work cause the device isn't actually turned off but only put to sleep. So a restart allowed the Apple TV to actually reset all communication channels and start from scratch.

I hope something as simple as this solves this issue for most of you guys, if not all. Share your findings, please.

    Cheers!

    TOTALLY.

Same problem; Yosemity iTunes, ATV 3, just NOTHING doing.

It completely and utterly blows my mind that of all the high level functions I put my iMac through, and that considering my ATV 3 SELDOM has any problem streaming HD movies on demand from servers 100's or 1,000's of miles away, that BY FAR the glitchiest, most screwed up function on my supposedly awesome expensive Apple gear, is to simply send an mp3 file from MY OWN LOCAL HARD DRIVE (over a WiFi router that clearly works for Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Go, and oh yeah ATV iTunes VOD) down about 20 feet to my ATV on the stereo below.

It's absolutely unbelievable how many ways they can screw this up, how insanely unreliable is this supposedly seamless technological network we pay so much for.   And don't get me started on what a cluster-glitch it can be to use the iPhone or iPad's Remote functions (not to mention it's LOUSY interface requiring about 4 press selections to go between the only two screens worth using for TV shows: full directional control (signified by four arrows), and Now Playing with skip fwd and back functions.  You might as well plan a trip to the moon for all the hassle and malfunctions you're going to get.

My love hate relationship with Apple tips yet again to the hate.

Oh, as of today my iPad is also not seeing Apple TV Air Play any more.  Terrific.  Boy, Apple really doesn't care how much their bug riddled updates create constant instability in these devices.  They're the worst.

"Just works," that's a good laugh.  It's us who "just work," troubleshooting Apple yourself is like taking a part time I.T. support job.   How I'd love to charge these ***holes by the hour for this.

This seems to fix the opposite problem of an iPhone running the RemOrr app not being able to find the Apple TV.

I changed the name of the Apple TV and restarted and now the Apple TV shows up on mt iPhone running Remote app!

    THanks!
