Q: Earpods remote not working anymore on Mac

Hi all,

I don't know if it's just me, but my Apple Earpods remote stopped working since I upgraded to OS X Yosemite.

I tried two different versions of the Earpods (the newest in-ear version, and an old one from an iPhone 4S).

With earlier versions of OS X I could control iTunes using the remote on the Earpods (like turning volume up and down, or skip tracks etc.).

With Yosemite nothing happens when I press the buttons. Does anyone else have the same problem?

Cheers

Oli

    Hello there Oliver Matuschin,

If your EarPods still aren't properly control audio playback, take a look at this info from the following article:

How to use Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic with your Mac

Sometimes the volume controls or microphone don't seem to work after I've plugged them in to my computer.  How can I change this?

You might have held down the volume control switch while plugging them in.  This can cause the volume controls or microphone to function in unexpected ways.  Unplug the earphones from the computer and plug them in again, taking care not to press the volume control switch while doing so.

If that does not resolve it, I would next reet the PRAM on the computer:

How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac

    1. Shut down your Mac.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R.
    3. Turn on your Mac.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.
    5. Hold these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.
    6. Release the keys.

After resetting NVRAM, you may need to reconfigure settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

    Cheers,

    Sterling

    Hi Sterling,

thanks for your response. However, it seems to be a bug of Yosemite. I tried the headphones on several Macs running yosemite, and they didn't work anywhere. If I use them on a Mac with Mavericks they work just fine.

I'll submit a bug report to Apple...

    Cheers

The pram reset helped me with the issue, thank you.
