    Hello Sam,

I am not sure if you have tried this, but check out the steps in the article below to go over downloading the lessons again.

Sorry norm123 that doesn't work either.  I've tried it and no cigar.  I want my money back.

    Hey Sam,

Apologizes for the article not helping you get your lessons downloaded in GarageBand. My next suggestion would be to contact Apple for additional support. The link below will get you started with that.

    Contact Apple Support

    https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action

    Take care,

    -Norm G.

Apple is aware of this problem and is working on a solution.

Sam - I'm sure they are aware of the problem but how do you know they are working on a solution.  From what I've read online its been a long time coming.

Apple support person mentioned there were a number of complaints about this and that the engineers are working on a solution. No time line was given.

I will describe the simple technique I used to get the files. Apparently, Apple's in no rush to fix this (hey, it's free content, so, I get that…).

Long story: Trying to get those lessons, as we know, fails. The download gets to around 80%, then you get an error message from GB. I tried mucking with permissions, etc. Even hung out with a few smart folks at the Apple Store for a couple hours, hoping they had a fix, or already had the lesson files I could copy. Nope. Every Mac in the store failed to download.

    Technique

    1. I used Activity Monitor to watch the network activity while GB tried to get the lesson files. I easily saw that the files are stored on Akamai, and have URLs.

    2. Copy the URL, paste it into Safari. The file (a .pkg installer file) downloads just fine.

    3. Open .pkg file, run installer***, lesson appears!

***Apple doesn't watch these boards, but the real problem appears to be that the Apple Software Update certificate authority ("CA" - used to digitally sign the software for security) expired mid-February. So, when GB tries to install the downloaded file, the certificate error fails the install. When you're running the installer manually, you have to open the certificate window and "trust" the certificate!!! If Apple would simply update the .pkg files with a new signed cert, I think this would all go away.

Also, GB will try to keep attempting to download the failed lessons. Best bet is to delete each attempted lesson (select the lesson, press delete) before installing the newly downloaded files.

I was hoping a smart guy would post a work around. I can't find a URL reference for Akamai when I sample the process in Activity Monitor while downloading my lesson in GB.  Am I using the Activity monitor correctly?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The "Akamai" reference is mostly a hint. It appears on a line that precedes the file location, which is not at all formed as a URL. In fact, you have to copy the file location out of the entry string, then prepend http:// to get a functional URL.

In AM, optionally set a filter to show on the GarageBand process. Launch GB, and start a lesson download. On the GB process (in AM), double-click (or do an Inspect). Then click the Open Files and Ports tab.

Here's what you're looking for (always at the very bottom):

    192.168.1.116:62969->a23-3-106-200.deploy.static.akamaitechnologies.com:http

    192.168.1.116:62970->*.112.2o7.net:http

    /private/var/folders/wt/ds0l7tz51tddq4zwtmvv80qm0000gn/C/com.apple.GarageBand/do wnloads.apple.com/a/esd2/us-garageband/_/lessons/basic/2Z695-0050_Guitar Lesson 2_Chords - G, C.pkg

Grab this, then slap the http:// in front (as one example):

    downloads.apple.com/a/esd2/us-garageband/_/lessons/basic/2Z695-0050_Guitar Lesson 2_Chords - G, C.pkg

Good luck! But, I do hope Apple just fixes this soon! Hint, hint...

THAT'S IT.  Wow very slick, did the trick, got my paid lesson from John Fogerty and loaded it up.  Works just fine.  I would have never figured that out.  But I spent quite a few years in the DOS/Windows world and am used to work arounds like that.  I don't know how many folks on these posts would get this but it's really not that hard to do.

I should mention that once you get the Packet (.pkg) its in your downloads folder and all you have to do is double click it to get the file put in you GB library.  You don't have to manually put it there but you can check your Finder hard drive at /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Learn to Play and you'll see it there.  Or just launch it out of GB it'll show up.  also you're going to want to trash the .pkg file that shows up in your downloads folder other wise you'll be cluttering up your hard drive with unnecessary data once the lesson is installed in GB.

Thanks so much for the work around, it really works folks.  In time Apple will get around to fixing it but why wait if this works.  Happy GB'ing.

This solution works, thanks! However, I can't delete the attempted lesson downloads using this method. To see the newly installed lessons, I must wait until GB attempts and fails to download a lesson (which I've already manually installed myself), acknowledge the failed download, and then the manually installed lessons appear. Is there a way to get GB to recognize the manually installed lessons so it doesn't attempt to re-download them?

Same problem here. Can't stop the auto attempted downloads from occurring and the manually downloaded versions only appear after attempts have failed.

You've got to trick GB into believing the lessons aren't there because if you delete the attempting downloads you also delete the lessons you downloaded via Kenny's instructions:

    1. Quit GB
    2. Move the lesson file(s) GB is trying to download that you already have in /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Learn to Play to your desktop so GB can't find them
    3. Open GB, say OK to continuing the downloading and delete all the lessons that are trying to download.
    4. Quit GB
    5. Move the lesson(s) on your desktop back to /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Learn to Play
    6. Reopen GB.  The downloading won't start up automatically again and your lessons will show.

Kinda convoluted but what we're doing here isn't in the manual.  The program wants to work in its own way so you have to work around it.  Thanks again to Kenny for thinking outside the box.
