Q: Your System has Run out of Application memory

I upgraded to Mavericks from Mountain Lion, and I have been getting the error message "Your System has Run out of Application memory", and I am forced to restart the computer to be able to keep working.

I have been monitoring the Activity Monitor and I have not found a process that is increasing the amount of memory used. I have seen a proliferation of processes.

I have an iMac 27-inch, Late 2012 with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 and 24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

Are you sure. Paid for Symantec and not sure if I can reinstall it once removed?

You should not have installed it in the first place.

    It's your choice.

Yes, I concur with Csound1. That was extremely bad advice.

The directions to remove Symantec are at http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH103489

    Okay thanks.

Just checked several forums and some say you need antivirus on a mac and others say I don't.

Doesn't removing Symantec mean I'm open to viruses and malware.

Also, Symantec wouldn't be the reason I run out of memory that quickly would it?

I mean, no antivirus program should use 20Gb in a day?

Symantec now removed but memory is still eating away.

Any other suggestions as to what could be the problem?

And is my Mac not less protected now against such things?

You can think of Symantec on your Mac as a black hole for computer resources. It uses an inordinate amount of system resources just a black hole

draws everything into itself. And like a black home it returns nothing for those resources.

No. Symantec was in fact protecting your Mac from nothing.

I have been using a variety of Mac systems for over 10 years without an antivirus system.

MacOS is extremely sturdy.  At present, as far as I know, the easiest way to install malware of any sort on a Mac is via social engineering, which basically means you help the guys in black hats subvert your own system.

I have many friends who I have converted to Mac from Windows.  None of them runs antivirus.  This is because MacOS is very secure indeed.  One day someone may work out a way to subvert the hundreds of millions of Macs but until that day antivirus is a waste of time and resources (and a possible source of errors itself)

You have a small internal drive, and it has very little free space left. It would appear that there is no longer sufficient space available for system and application caches, etc. You will need to clean house, move some stuff off your internal drive that you don't need on a daily basis and store that on an external disk.

Okay thanks. Removed almost every file I could find I wouldn't need regularly and got to 35Gb available. Few hours later and the storage is gone again. So still have the initial issue that the Mac runs out of storage fast

my system runs out of system memory every day.

launchd spans an app launchS which eats memory

use activity monitor, look at system memory

    force quit launchS

    i just fixed it again

    do it everyday

i keep activity monitor open and just keep an eye on it

    no reboot
