Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

I wanted to buy a new 15-inch MacBook with Retina, but refused to buy because of this singularity of Retina Display. Even if this screen is replaced by a new one, the new one will be the same.

that's exactly what i told the the apple customer service denier person when i went to the store.  i said why should i pay $400 to have the screen replaced if it will just turn defective again in 18 months like my original since you said nothing is wrong with the screen - it's all a result/fault of the user.  then this will just happen again, year after year.  In other words, i need to pay $400 a year just to have my retina macbook to not have a defective-looking screen.

since then my wife inquired about getting an apple and i advised her against it and she won't be getting one.  we'll be transitioning back to PC's where the machines cost 1/2 as much and they don't break down, on the average, 18months after purchase as has happened to my screen and my sons retina macbook which died completely 4months out of warranty.   Also, since i transitioned to apple, power packs cost me 250% more and my expected battery replacement will cost me 250% more than they did before i got apple.

Yep, very similar thing happened to me today. A colleague asked me for advice what kind of laptop to buy. And as I have a Macbook Pro she asked how the Macbook Air is (she wants to buy something very light). So I told here that the Macbook Air is a nice peace of hardware, but beware...

To make it short, I told her if she buys a Macbook Air she should buy it from an Apple store and get an extra official Apple no time limited warranty that goes beyond the standard one, explicitly stating that if any damage to the anti reflective coating occurs the screen will be replaced no questions asked and at no cost. I strongly recommended that if she is not getting this warranty (which surely will be the case), that she should NOT BUY !

So Apple I hope you read this !!!!!! I'm just a little guy giving advice to employees in a company of about 500 employees in size. Imagine the damage you create by all those frustrated participants here all making negative advertising about Apple MacBooks. No problem, continue to play dead, I continue to spread the news about Apple quality and Apple customer support.

I came to my last date of warranty period and I reject the warranty service.

I listen the reply from authorized service center. It should be paid by me. not under warranty.

I think it is unfair...... And my warranty period went out.

I tell same words like mwille64

So once and for all, this is not an issue of owners treating their Macbook wrongly !!!!

Alex, for the missing feet there, try using Sugru, https://sugru.com/ It's a mouldable clay that sets into hard rubber in 24 hrs.  A lot of people are having success with it.

I'm going to use it for the frayed ends of my power adaptor (another common problem with macbooks).  Have a look here, their packaging even shows the fix on Apple power adaptors as an example of what you can do with it:

    81XbKBZiCgL.jpg

A bit off topic, but I also have a very rough edge from wearing a watch and it tapping constantly against the right front edge (which is normal when typing on the keyboard), but i hadn't noticed it for a while.  I feel the roughness all the time now and have removed my watch when using my macbook.  This is also a common problem and people are advised to remove metal bangles and watches when using a macbook.

    IMG_1321.jpg

Apple make such beautiful and wonderful products, but it's like Apple don't test their products in the real world.  Makes me wonder, a lot, if the Apple employees (including Jony Ive and Tim Cook) suffer from these same problems. They MUST also have these issues.

Do they wash their hands before using it, and wipe the keyboard clean before closing it (to prevent grease interacting with the AR coating)?

Do they have power adaptors at home and in the office toso as not to move the cord (to prevent the cord fraying)?

And do they remove their Apple Watches (with metal bands) to prevent it damaging the edge of the wrist rest?

But none of this is normal 'expected' behaviour.

There should be FRAGILE stickers on the device.

Macbooks are wonderfully designed and engineered, but it's like they have to be used in a sealed glass box, not in normal everday use.

Back to the topic, I'm going to the Apple store when I go back to London, I'm still in the EU 2 year warranty, and I'll show them this thread.  I'm usually quite good at reasoning, and this AR coating deteriotation under reasonable use should be covered by the EU warranty (a defect that was there from the time of purchase - which is badly applied AR coating that deteriorates to a point of making it unsuitable for its' intended use (i use it for graphics design).

    I'll report back the results.

I also will send an email to employees in my company which has 700 people in total. Warning them regarding the issue and share this forum page.

As I told before. People knows that this is not a user issue and will not stop continue for their rights until it is solved.

I have an 2008 macbook pro using as a server. The screen is brilliant not stains nothing. So why after 10 months there are stains on 2013 retina macbook pro and genius guys tells me no guarantee for that. Now my guarantee is not valid anymore.

Apple should start a repair program for these devices.

    hi,

what annoy's me most is the fact that

    - when i bought my macbook everyone in the store discouraged me to use a screen protector
      (in fact the had none)
    - every time i asked how to clean the device and followed the instructions of the apple store staff

    now today ...

    - everybody blames ME and the way i use and care for my apple device without actually knowing what i did.

1st  you have used aggressive cleaning (which i didn't)

2nd you used force on the cover which ruined the display coating (used a case purchased in the apple store to prevent exactly this)

3 ... you should have cleaned the keyboard (which i do regularly)

4 ... you should have put a piece of cloth between the screen and the keyboard (I didn't true :-) )

    and WHY ?!

was nobody telling me these stories beforehand ... preventive care ... even when being asked ?

    no answers ...

    well ... that's it ...

I dunno, I think they've known from early on because I bought mine in April 2013 and started getting the stain between the spacebar and trackpad after about 6 months, and I was like ***?? but thankfully I had the image retention problem due to it being an LG screen, so they replaced the screen.  However, the stain started coming back again and now it's very bad.  So I think at least since early 2013 it's been happening

I believe I've heard people on here with some of the first 2012 retinas saying they've have the problem (i'm not 100% though).

I think we should make a record of the earliest models that have this deficiency.  Is that in the wufoo database?

Also, does anyone know if this happened with earlier non-retina models?

If thats the case, that they are fully aware of this problem and deny helping the customers with this issue, even with warranty, then this will be my last Apple product. Since I dont have damages yet I don't have to deal with it (yet). But I'm sure in some time mine will start as well.

If theres a cure for it, removing the coating entirely without any residu, this is a good solution for me as well.

I love the laptop in every other aspect.

Anybody knows is there the same problem on the iMac with 5K-screen? It is over USD3,000, and I would not like to buy an initially defective goods.

Hi Alex, I doubt iMac screens would suffer from the same problem, even if the AR coating was poorly applied, due to the iMac screen not being in regular contact with a keyboard and our abhorrent skin excretions.

I'd assume that you'd be safe with a iMac, but use gloves if touching it, just in case.

I have to add again, I love the engineering and design of the MacBook, and all other Apple products (especially the the way the MacBook screen doesn't wobble at all when open - so obvious when you use another laptop).

But they're just too **** fragile for the real world.  It's like the designers are thinking that these devices will be used in a utopian environment.  "Hey Jony Ive, try using your products in our dystopia, see how they hold up mate, "

By the way, just to report back on my frayed cables fix (on the power adaptor) using Sugru, it works amazingly well.  I'll post photos later.

I just now need to find a way to fix the chipped up edge on the wrist rest edge caused by my watch (will it be covered in future if it was caused by an Apple Watch, it'll be interesting to find out if Apple designers remove their watches when using their MB.  Fix = forgo design and purity sometimes, and toughen the edges that will come into regular bangs from watches / jewelry, maybe a thin steel edge).

We need these devices to exist in the real world with us, not in the ivory towers of the Apple design studio.

(yeah i know, give 'em an inch, and they'll want a yard.  But improvements are also called progress.  We need to be dissatisfied in order to improve.  But I digress, slightly, the AR coating is just ****)

Thank you, Jakaya. Sometimes it seems to me that the screen is spoiled due to I look at it through the eyes. Most likely, it is necessary either to wear special looking-glasses or watch the eyes closed.
