Q: iWeb Replacement

Is Apple going to be replacing iWeb anytime soon? I really don't like the the alternatives. Freeway Pro, Rapidweaver and Sandvox. I have them all and none do I like. Too many add on things in hopes of making a better page. Too much cost.

I really want iWeb or a new version now. iWeb is OK but limited now because of no further support.

I agree. It appears there is some marketing going on in this forum. No matter how much you promote this product, it is NOT a replacement for iWeb. It could have been, had the company not tried to swindle people into paying for their hosting services.

Forget all these fly-by-night so-called iWeb replacements, they're crap. Check out Weebly instead, I've been very impressed by it.

You don't have to pay for hosting. You can buy the software without hosting and publish directly to an ftp server which is what I was doing for a while. Weebly. As suggested, does not allow you to publish to ftp, you must use their hosting.

Most of of the people recommending EverWeb here have been forum members for years, well before it was released and have spent a lot of time helping people with iWeb issues.

everweb is made by a company that has supported iweb for a very, very long time. It's highly recommended because of this and has been around for longer than most other web development tools.

Lets keep this discussion respectful and ensure that the proper information is posted as to not confuse other people.

I agree.  Everweb support is very prompt and they are doing their best to rectify this problem.  If you don't want to purchase hosting, they have a lesser priced product without it.  I am very impressed so far with all the prompt support.  I will repost when the crash situation gets rectified.

By talking about Weebly you are not comparing like with like and Weebly and EverWeb and other replacements and not the same at all.

With Weebly, it is an online builder and you must sign up for an account with Weebly and start building your site and when you publish your site you publish your site for free directly to the Weebly servers, so you have no control.  It is very much like WordPress.com in this respect where you can create a totally free website if you then publish to the WordPress servers.  You can upgrade for a fee and use a registered domain name with an account, but you have no control to be able to use an ftp application to upload your site folders to your site.

Weebly might be good if you want to create a quick and free website and you have not registered a domain name or purchased hosting of any description, but it is not the same as EverWeb or any other iWeb replacements because it works in a totally different way.

If you want to make comparisons, at least make fair ones and compare like with like.

It is not correct that you are forced into purchasing EverWeb hosting to be able to publish directly from EverWeb.

It is perfectly possible to purchase the standalone copy of EverWeb and then publish from within EverWeb directly to an ftp server without the need to publish your site to a folder or use Cyberduck to upload.  This was one of the first things that Rage implemented in EverWeb because it was present in iWeb and so many people wanted it.

Rage has been around for a long time and also supported iWeb greatly when it was at its height with all its products developed for them, such as iWeb SEO and others.  That is why folks are recommending EverWeb, because they have been around and know what they are doing when it comes to developing software that is a replacement for iWeb.

It's not quite correct that you must use Weebly's hosting services as it is also available for free through other service providers (iPage for instance). Yes, it's a template-based online builder, so some limitations, though in my mind far outweighed by ease of use & professional looking results. I have limited time and patience to futz around with this stuff, and so for me at least it was perfect.

I still swear by Freeway Express by a UK company called Softpress. I found the interface very similar to iWeb. I really wanted a WYSIWYG option but there are templates if you want. The plus to Freeway Express (Freeway Pro is overkill for my needs) is that the words are entered as HTML which means they are searchable. Sometimes iWeb inserts typed sections as an image meaning it's not searchable. You can also add keywords, lots of them.

I guess I can't paste a URL here but you can google Freeway Express Softpress and find it there. On the SUPPORT page you'll find some videos and also a link to their online forum, much like Apple's. Very helpful.

Freeway Express is available to purchase in the Mac App Store too.

My site is over 1200 pages and iweb is beginning to act up.

What exactly do you mean by "act up"? What is actually happening and what are you trying to do?

What version of iWeb are you using?

What version of OS X are you using?

My iWeb finally stopped working right.  The text that are links have become 'invisible' when online even though the link still works.  When you change the text back to normal (not a link to anything), they appear when online.

Oh well. So much for El Capitan.

I just now tried what you have described in iWeb links, and it worked just fine? I added some text to an existing page that contains a link, published the site and viewed it in Safari, and it displayed accordingly and linked as it should. I have been using iWeb a lot since my upgrade to El Capitan, on three different Macs without any issues at all. I can't believe that OS X would treat html any differently from version to version? If I were you I would look at the html in an editor (I like Coda). This would show if there is some change to the text or to the link url. If you are using css you might want to look at that to see if it got changed somehow.

I am facing the same issue.  For those pages that were generated under El Capitan, most of the links have become invisible.  When I hover over the link, and even click on it, the link is there.  I've tried bringing the link to the foreground and it is disabled.

If I can't get this resolved, I may have to back out El Capitan.
