Q: Notification Badge on message app won't go away

Hello,

on my messages app I have a badge for an unread message. The problem is that I already deleted this message but the badge still remains visible. Can I somehow reset the badge counter?

I use OS X 10.10.2

Thx for your help!

Regards,

Ben

Back up all data. Rebuild the mailbox.

    Hi,

If this is for the Messages app rather than the Mail one then try the following.

    Open Activity Monitor in Applications/Utilities

In the list find the Dock (it will be close to the Finder as they both start up when the Mac does).

Highlight the item then use the x Quit icon top left.

Confirm you want to Force Quit in the dialogue box.

The Dock will disappear and re-appear at the bottom of the Screen and it will re-appear at the top of the list in Activity Monitor.

The Unread badge should be gone.

    Hi,

thank you guys for your help:

@Linc Davis: rebuilding the mailbox doesn’t work with the messages app, right?

    @Ralph Johns

Force to quit and restarting the messages app doesn’t work unfortunately.

The problem is that I deleted a unread message and the app still shows a badge for it.

    Any ideas?

    Hi,

Seeing I never said Force Quit the Messages app it will not work.

The Issue is the Dock Badge  (ergo the DOCK)

As I said Force Quit the DOCK.

I misread the question. Please sign out of all the messaging services you use and sign back in. If there's no change, log out or restart the computer.

Got it now. I did the following:

    1) Close Messages App

    2) Force quit Dock (via Terminal)

    3) Open Messages App again

Only force quitting the Dock without closing Messages didn't work out for me.

    Thx for your help!

I also never said Open the App or do it whilst Messages was open.

Having said that I haven't had the issue myself and would have done if it the App was open.

    Thanks for the extra info.

This is just putting off the problem and is a temporary fix

This issue keeps happening to me and it's related to one contact/person. It doesn't appear any other time, just when my friend texts me or gchats me. Just him. No one else.

    Hi,

    I have seen this issue.

I can sort of recreate it, on occasion, but this does take an iMessages or SMS item that I have read on my iPhone which then shows up in the DOCK badge - before I launch the app when I turn my computer on - and then  deleting the thread/Chat in the Main Messages window as soon as it is visible.  (this seems to be  before the app is fully launched and does not clear the DOCK Badge).

It is probably a freak of timing and difficult to replicate consistently.

Killing the DOCK in the Activity Monitor does sort this straight away.

In my cases so does restarting the computer.

I can see this sort of action might be plausible for just one person if they chat or iMessages you a lot and you have read most stuff already.

I don't have any suggestions that might change this for regular occurrences as you describe if they are not caused by the actions I described.

Did both Force Quite via Activity Monitor of the dock and then signed out of of the imessage account then back in.  Upon doing so the notification was still there however by clicking and holding it shows the unread message which I was able to click on and then clear.  Very odd.

    Thanks for the help all.
