Q: HDMI TO VGA DOESN'T WORK

It sounds like the resolution needs to be change for the projector. To that, go to System Preferences > Displays and you will see an option to change the resolution. Look for a button that says Gather Windows to bring the settings for the other display and then change the resolution for the projector to finally show an image. The articles below will explain further if you need it.
