Mar 4, 2015 12:13 PM in response to roscoe108by OWC Larry,Good deal and hopefully things stay true. Knock on wood - I am now about a month past doing the steps that worked for me - and back to going a full day on one charge with plenty of charge to spare. Forgot to plug in last night and still was over 40% this morning (although I used the phone less than usual the day before - was still off power for about 24 hours at that point - no phantom drain).
Even before doing the Exchange reset, the first two steps restored my phone to a state of practical battery life with the 'device heat' and excessive drain issue eliminated. Before I gave that much time though (maybe the issue would have returned?) I did the exchange nuke and pave reset. That has made battery life better than I had recently remembered it being even before the 8.1.3 update.
I'd say for some, maybe many - the exchange sync revision issue, killing what ever loop that a present issue causes, is the fix that works.
(it's something to do with exchange image snapshots of current mail statuses - and even this description layman's could be way off a proper explanation - but apparently the number of these versioning can exponentially climb on an active account where some base sync value has corrupted or fallen out of normal sync).
the issue with devices, even those that have gotten new phones and have the same issue - has to come down to something in process of elimination. That being said - It's frustrating that any issues exist like this... these kinds of bugs shouldn't exist.

Mar 4, 2015 1:15 PM in response to Zahir Ahmadby Gator5000e,I wonder if there could be a problem with the iOS communicating with the battery about the correct level of power. In the past, on prior iPhone models, when my battery has died, it would take minutes for the white apple to show up and the phone to restart. Currently, when the phone dies and is plugged in, the boot up is almost instant and the battery level shows a 5% or so right off the bat. Then the charging level increases almost as fast as it decreases.

Mar 4, 2015 1:58 PM in response to Gator5000eby Lawrence Finch,You can recalibrate the battery gauge as follows:
- Run the battery down until the phone shuts off
- If it shuts off above 1% charge for a minute or so, then continue running it down
- Repeat as needed until it actually reaches 1% before it shuts off
- Charge it for 4 hours with the wall adapter, without using the phone.
If the problem is as you describe this should fix it. It's a fairly common problem. If it still shuts off above 1% then your battery may be failing. If you take it to an Apple store they can actually test the battery.

Mar 4, 2015 2:30 PM in response to Lawrence Finchby Gator5000e,I've tried that but it shuts off before it hits 1% but then it won't turn on. I get the battery charge needed indicator. I've even kept hitting the power button a few times to try to make sure it's discharged than plugged it into the charger over night. Has not made a difference.

Mar 4, 2015 2:31 PM in response to Gator5000eby Lawrence Finch,Then you probably need a new battery.

Mar 4, 2015 2:35 PM in response to Lawrence Finchby Gator5000e,Well, I'll check but this phone was just replaced at the Genius Bar 2 weeks ago. They will probably tell me I'm crazy (and I might be after all this!!). Will the diagnostics run from the support site (where they send you the text message to run a quick or extended diagnostic) indicate the need for a new battery?

Yes, I'm pretty sure that can test the battery.

Mar 6, 2015 10:29 AM in response to OWC Larryby ghunarsdad,What are the steps to do the "Exchange Reset" you are talking about?
-
Mar 6, 2015 10:38 AM in response to ghunarsdadby OWC Larry,Delete the account entirely off the phone and re-add it. Let it reload. Nuke and Pave.

Mar 6, 2015 10:56 AM in response to OWC Larryby Lawrence Finch,Reboot between the delete and add.
You can also accomplish this by simply turning off all the switches in the Exchange account settings, rebooting, then turning them back on.

Mar 7, 2015 9:20 AM in response to Lawrence Finchby ghunarsdad,Thanks for the info Larry & Lawrence.
When you say reboot - you mean power down and up, or actual reset with sleep/home buttons?

Mar 9, 2015 1:24 PM in response to Zahir Ahmadby Gator5000e,Well, 8.2 is out. I just installed it via iTunes. We will see if it makes any difference in battery life. I am convinced that something in the background and related to cellular activity of some kind (and outside the user's control to turn it off or otherwise adjust it) is causing this drain. I will report back on whether i see any difference or not.

Mar 9, 2015 6:17 PM in response to Gator5000eby ohhmy,8.2 doesn't fix it. I am on phone number 2 and on call number 3 with apple care. First person very eager to help, we changed all mail settings to "manual". They called me back 8 hours later and I used my phone for 5 minutes during that time, all apps were closed, background off, location services off (disabling much of the phone). Lost 30% battery and the usage time and standby time were nearly identical, that is the part that I don't understand and that Apple has not acknowledged. I continue to get the company line "your battery usage is within normal parameters". But no one has the answer why the usage and standby are nearly identical after not using the phone for hours.
