Q: deleting files does not change available disk space

A friend with a MacBook Pro deleted several gigs of music files trying to free up HD space. After he emptied the trash, he restarted his Mac, only to find that, while the files were gone, he still had the same amount of free disk space he had before deleting the files. He then tried to restore his music from a Time Machine Backup, but a few minutes into the process he received an error message that the process couldn't be completed due to a long file name. Any thoughts on what to try next? All music is on iTunes Match, so it isn't lost at least.
