Q: What's happening here: iCloud Photos preparing photos for 'Photos' app?

This morning I came back from a weekend trip to Prague, where I took a number of photos with my iPhone 6. On my Mac I fired up iCloud Photos to see if everything was imported properly. That was about an hour ago. Since then I am presented with this screen, saying something like:

"Welcome to Photos app.

With Photos app you may save your whole iCloud Photo Library ...

Preparing photos ... This may take a few minutes.

... will be continued when you leave iCloud.com."

However, with Yosemite 10.10.2 I don't have the new Photos app for Mac on my iMac!

Now what is happening here?

I had the same problem yesterday - "preparing photos" went on and on for hours.  But this morning the library was working again.

iCloud Photo Library is still Beta, and probably some updates have been installed that required an update of the libraries in iCloud. If we are using Beta software, we have to be prepared for surprises like this.

And thank you again, léonie, for your reply and for making this clear to me.

There was a time when I promoted Apple devices and OSses to everybody for giving the users very clear statements about whats going on. I even liked Apples error messages , because most of them were so helpful ... But now the smart guys at Apple seem to be following a more obfuscating strategy, at least sometimes.

I suspect the maintenance work on iCloud Photo Library this weekend has been in preparation for the big life event today - then all will be revealed:   http://www.apple.com/live/

My account has been stuck on this screen for at least 15 hours.  I hope this is temporary and I don't lose all the work I've done building my photo library.

One interesting thing I noticed is that new photos are still being synced between my iPad and my iPhone.

Try to open the Photos.app on any other device you have - iPad, iPhone, Mac (if Beta tester). That might speed things up.

Message "Preparing Fotos App" still on screen, 12 hours later. Wonder what will be tomorrow morning. And a bit upset about Apple letting me standing in the rain and not giving any hint on why this is happening and what might be the consequences for my iCloud Photo Library.

I'm at 21 hours. I guess I'm going to have to contact Apple Care. I dread the long drawn out process that that often turns into. If I learn anything, I'll pass it on.

Send a bug report to Apple using the feedback form: the more feedback arrives, the better.

48 hours and I'm still getting the "preparing photo" message too. I've had 3 sessions with Apple Support and they have turned over my account to the engineers for analysis.  About 2 months ago, several other users and myself were experiencing a somewhat similar issue with iCloud Photo Library not displaying new pictures That were uploaded.  I went through a similar process with Apple Support and when they finally found a fix, it fixed it for everyone that was having the problem. Hopefully we'll get a similar result, if this thing doesn't soon clear up on its own.

Ok, 50 hours later it's still unchanged. I'll have to contact Apple Support later, when I find the time.

At least it's good to know that I am not alone with this issue ...
