Q: Lag in Typing in Yosemite's Mail w/ External Apple Keyboard

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have been having a very annoying problem with delayed typing response in Mail when I have my external USB Apple keyboard (current model with numeric pad).  It is a sporadic issue.  Typing will be responsive, then there are 2-4 second delays in response.  I have only witnessed the issue with Mail and when using the external keyboard.  Problem does not occur in other programs or when using my MacBook Pro's built in keyboard.  Nor did the problem exist prior to upgrading to Yosemite.

My equipment is a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina.  When on my desk, I have it connected to a 23" Apple Display (original LCD), USB Apple Keyboard, Logitech cordless Trackman, and a Drobo firewire external drive.

Has anyone else witnessed this issue?  Or have an suggestions on correcting?

Thank you in advance!

Great news. I second the kudos to all who kept plugging for our own fix.

Haven't yet updated to 10.10.3 but having posted twice about the Mail text-lag problem on the Apple Feedback page apple.com/feedback/macosx, I plan to go there one more time to offer kudos there for the fix — after I install 10.10.3 and see text entry in a new email working as it should. /e/

Thanks so much!! it solved a problem that was driving me crazy: I was unable to make edits on the mail message text. The cursor and characters would jump out of place when I tried to make edits. I changed the font in Mail preferences to Helvetica Neue and it works now!. Thanks!

    BINGO!!!

A beautiful senior Apple Engineer asked me to remove the "Markup" icon from the message header. That did it!!

I tried the "slow key", removed app's, etc. and nothing worked.. See screen shot.   Report back please. Laaaaaggggg.jpg

I don't have "markup" in my toolbar, so I don't think that's it.  Sorry to bring bad news.

just to confirm, you don't see it when you open a blank email message window?  Not the main Mac Mail window!

I have had this issue since October of last year, had Apple replace the logic board and another component.. Removing that icon has magically solved it..

Ah.  Didn't realize I was looking in a blank message.  Nope, no "markup" gizmo there either....

I do not have "markup" icon in my toolbar (message header, as you call it) in any of my windows.

Don't we have confirmation now that this is a bug in Mail, which surfaced in the release version of 10.10 and is now fixed in 10.10.3?

There have been many, many suggestions that some setting might be involved, but none has panned out. On the other hand, several users of 10.10.3 public beta have said the bug is fixed.

I'm surprised an Apple rep didn't know this.

That's pretty close to my understanding, although I can't confirm anything since I never had the issue, but just one big caveat.... It's not fixed until 10.10.3 is released which is almost certainly several weeks away yet. Beta products change over time and what's fixed today can be broken again tomorrow. I see it all the time.

I actually had a senior advisor send me some log capture tool.. Then called me a few days later, did share screen, some monkeying around. At the end that "Markup" icon was causing extra traffic and processing.. That fixed my problem..

I know it is frustrating because none of the solutions mentioned above worked for me, but worked for some..

Yes, I suspect that whatever they have in the current 10.10.3 beta solved the root cause of the problem and that the other solutions only identify things that contribute to it or cause the issue to arise. When you decide to install the 10.10.3 update, it would be interesting to know if you are able to add the markup icon back to the toolbar without causing a lag.  Similarly for others who have changed fonts, etc.

I can also confirm that after 2 full days of use, the 10.10.3 beta has fixed the mail text entry delay/lag on my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro. Slow Keys is and has been disabled for the past 48 hours. Welcome back Caps Lock and Dictation!

Yay. Hopefully the release version of 10.10.3 will fix this issue once and for all for everyone.

And always a good reminder to test new OS versions (i.e. Yosemite) on a bootable clone *before* installing on your production/primary machine. Those who say 'wait for the .2 or .3 release' are already on this program...
