Q: No airplay on my ipad to connect to apple tv

Both my 4th Gen iPad (A1460) and my Apple TV 3rd Gen Rev A (A1469) are running IOS 8.2 but I don't see the AirPlay icon on my ipad.

I can't have them on the same network (I'm in a hotel and they isolate wifi devices), but I read that airplay should work peer-to-peer?

Apple TV, iOS 8.2

    Greetings vbl,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you would like to use peer-to-peer AirPlay with your iPad (4th generation) and your Apple TV (3rd generation) but you are not seeing the option to AirPlay on your iPad. Make sure that your iPad is connected to a Wi-Fi network and has Bluetooth turned on to use peer-to-peer airplay. If you continue to have issues, please let me know.

Use AirPlay to wirelessly stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

    Peer-to-peer AirPlay

With peer-to-peer AirPlay, your iOS device and Apple TV don't need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. If you have one of these products, you can use peer-to-peer AirPlay:

    * iPhone 5 or later, iPad (4th generation or later), iPad mini, or iPod touch (5th generation) using iOS 8 or later.
    * Apple TV (3rd generation rev A, model A1469 or later) with Apple TV software 7.0 or later. Find out which Apple TV model you have.

To use peer-to-peer AirPlay, your iOS device needs to have both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.

You'll need an Internet connection to stream iTunes content.

    Cheers,

    Joe

    Thanks Joe.

It started working shortly after I posted the above, even without Bluetooth.   Lots of pauses while it seems to be buffering though.

May I ask how AirPlay works?   I'm in a hotel room streaming movies off a NAS at home over the Internet using a 3rd party app on my iPad.   AppleTV continues to play (with the frequent pauses) even after the iPad shuts down, or if I open another app.

Is the iPad still streaming, or did AppleTV reconnect to the source?

    Thanks.
