Q: Is it even possible to create something like this using imovie?

So recently I started messing around with imovie creating a handful of projects just to kill time. Then one day I came across this video on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBZfg8TkBwM .

Somehow I don't think imovie can let me make a video like that. I'm interested in what kind of software that user used in creating that video. Any ideas?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

    like what?

That is basically a pic-in-pic effect, iMovie does offer:

Create the graphic  of a 'player interface' in some Paint.app (recommending Pixelmator)

    add with pic-in-pic the video-part.

    done.

or do you mean the 'effects' in use in some sequences?

Here that '4:3 to 16:9'-effect by adding the blurred 'extensions'.

Could be easiely done in FCPX.

Excellent photography. But that is skills, not software...

    slightly Off-topic: is that k-pop?

Heard that expression just lately .. (me old man)

Thanks for the reply. That is J-pop not k-pop. That band was pretty popular in the late 90s to early 2000s. They are still active.

I kinda want to recreate something like that on my mac just for kicks. Was hoping someone would point me in the right direction that is.

just quick'n dirty welderd, in a minute :

Background is a graphic, simulating a 'player'.

Then, drag the video onto it, select Pic-in-Pic, adjust size&position by moving the blue dots/handles..

    Drop dead easy

sorry, for mixing k- vs j-pop.... obviously not my domain...

oops, wrote your name wrong -  sorry again!!! .. maybe too fast weldered... .

How do you create the blinking words on the right? Sorry I'm a layman when it comes to messing with video editing . I'm sorta getting the hang of it now!

.. this is no 'beginners' task.

What comes to mind is using TWO background plates; one with 'glow', the other without.

Now, you have to stick it together in iMovie, 5 frames #, 15frames #2 = blink.

That 'two versions of the same pic' allows many other effects, not possible in iMovie, have a look in this User Tipp I once wrote...

"Movie Magic" with Stills and Dissolve

In case, you're a fast learner, consider Motion5 and/or FCPX - those 'pro' apps are made for 'Visual Effects' ...

What program should I be using to make those effect in my videos?

I recently came across another footage :

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FORAalwdi8o

Fast-forward to 3:35 and you will know what I mean. I want to add those interactive elements (number counter, moving clock etc) but don't know where to start or what to use!

The quick'n dirty demo up there is done just in iMovie = singer singing is a pic-in-pic effect, the rest is ONE 'painting' - I prefer to use Pixelmator, acrtually half price in the AppStore.

If you like to add blinking effects, you have to change the background every 2-4secs...

Actually busy, but perhaps in the late afternoon*, I could post here a 'recipe' ...

best-practice and offering -zillions of much more 'effects', would be usage of much more elaborated tools, such as Motion5 or FCPX .....

At first,  I have to 'organize' me some video-clip ... any recommendation for a beginner?

You need a pic in two versions:

    hit3.jpg

use that as background and apply your video as pic-in-pic ... switch btw. the two versions frequenty =  blinking!!

is a demo video; that's domne in minutes, forgive me my no-design LOL!!
