Q: Google Chat on Messages March 2015

Hi folks.

Is it true that Google Chat (Google Talk) is now unavailable in Messages?  I read somewhere it has all moved to Hangouts and isn't available anymore.

Having moved to a new router, I can't seem to get this going.  Anybody know what ports it is using?

Port 2553 using SSL?

Port 2552 non-SSL?

talk.google.com or gmail.com?

Any insight helpful.

Cheers

    Hi,

I use a GoogleMail ID in iChat when it was GoogleTalk.

I still use that ID and it works. (whatever Google are calling it there end).

I do not use 2 Step Verification.

Google had decided that SSL is not good enough and I have eanbled the Allow Less Secure apps option.

This I access in GoogleMail Web Page and Login then use my name top right as a Drop down and go to Account and then Security

So what port and server are you using now in Messages?  I've tweaked my system like your setup in GMail.

    Cheers

    Hi,

I List port 443 (I changed it a long time ago ) and SSL and the server is talk.google.com

It will still use port 5223.

Yeah I can't seem to get this to work for some reason.  I've tried everything.

    Is your SSL checkbox engaged?

    Cheers

    Hi,

My Settings.  A long time ago I found out that it would accept SSL Logins on port 443 as well as port 5223 and I have left it there (it is where Mail logs in)

    Screen Shot 2015-03-15 at 22.00.25.png

As you can see the server is still talk.google.com

I have other apps that I can get this Google account to login and they use port 5223.

As I also said I have also made changes At th Google end regarding not using @ Step Verification and using "Allow Less Secure Apps" that Google insist SSL logins use.

Yeah I can't seem to get this working.  It used to work and recently things just won't connect.

    Hi,

    Just to be clear.

I Log in to Google at the web Mail page for me (i have never really used anywhere else.

My Name top right is also a drop down and I select Account.

Scrolling down the next page  has these settings:-

    SecurityGoogle.png

The Messages Settings for my GoogleTalk account are shown above.

The port can stay at the 5223 if you would rather.

If these are the settings and it is not working check your router.

If you set the ports to be open by some methods like Port Forwarding  or DMZ then you have (your computer has to have the IP) to be at the IP listed.

Using UPnP allows the ports to be opened by the computer (effectively the apps) and close after a period on Non use.

The Settings is an On/Off setting but allows multiple computers or devices to use the same ports.  This can help if you computer changes IP address fairly regularly.

Yep, done a long time ago.  I really don't have a preference on the port number, as long as it works.  I've tried all combinations and it won't work.

These are the ports I have poked into my Cisco router:

    Screen Shot 2015-03-16 at 4.29.24 PM.png

All point to my workstation.  I can't have my workstation inside the DMZ.  I'm static internal IPs.

    Cheers

    Hi,

Bonjour (generally) so it shows up in the Finder's Side Bar > Shares needs port 5353.

If you use the Chat/Messages features it uses port 5298 and 5297 (both on UDP and 5298 also on TCP)

AIM accounts (or Apple IDs that can be AIM Screen Names) used to login on port 5190 but now do so on port 443.

If you use File Transfers your need port 5190 on the UDP protocol.

Video, Audio Only chats and Screen Sharing in AIM, Jabber  and Bonjour need port 5678 UDP to send the visible invite then port 16402 to send the SIP invite and data (actually it should be port 16393-16402 but it always starts top down).

Jabber needs either port 5222 for NON SSL logins or Port 5223 for SSL ones

iMessages uses port 5223 to check that your Contacts are registered with iMessages.

I am not aware that any part of iCloud uses this port.

This is from Using iChat with a firewall or NAT router - Apple Support  And Using FaceTime and iMessage behind a firewall - Apple Support

You list iCloud as needing port 5223.

Was this for FaceTime, iMessages and this Google ID in Messages ?

Thanks for the ports list.  Just updated them and no change.

It seems Google Talk is over for Messages for me.

I can't remember where I saw the ports list for iCloud.

    Cheers
