Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

Hi! I have the same issue on my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013). I was carefully cleaning my screen when I saw these ugly spots around display and I couldn't believe my eyes when it happened to me. This is unacceptable!!!

I've got a late 2012 13" MacBook Pro that is having exactly the same problem. There are noticeable marks where the screen touches the keys, along with a big, straight, horizontal strip.

Just to make the stats complete, here is another case. My MacBook Pro 15' Retina Mid '12 started to lose coating sometimes in early 2014. It got worse over time. It has a Samsung manufactured display. To be fair it shows loss of coating both in areas I clean more than others (the borders) and areas with contact to keyboard and trackpad.

Really happy I found this thread. I have the exact same problem. MacBook Pro  15" (Retina, Mid 2012 / 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 / 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3) bought in early 2013.

This problem appeared for the first time just a few months ago, before that the display has been pristine. I was really bummed out since I have always been extra careful to use only approved screen wipes. I called around back then and was told that I would need to replace the entire screen assembly at my own cost. Hopefully this thread will show it's a common defect. It looks pretty much identical to everyone else here, here's a picture :

I've already registered my machine on the website created.

However, I cannot believe the numbers of people that have posted after me a few weeks ago. This is so clearly a manufacturing defect that it's staggering Apple would not stand behind their products.

Given that, we should all advise family, friend, co-workers, and frequenters of relevant forums to stay away from these products as they are:

    1. very expensive

    2. defective

    3. not covered by AppleCare

4.not the subject of a root cause solution by Apple.

If this extends to the entirety of their product line, they should rightly take huge hits in their profits. It may take a quarter or two, but the reckoning in the marketplace will come.

Got the same issue! I can't believe this is the quality of Apple products! I swear to god I just cleaned my screen with water, the guy from Genius Bar told me that since my MacBook pro is out of warranty, I need to pay $600+ to replace it!!! #Good Apple quality!#

I have an iPad and have been contemplating the purchase of a MBPr.  I was shocked to come across this thread.  Clearly this is a colossal design error on the part of Apple.  I've had Toshiba, Samsung, Dell, HP, and Compaq laptops over the years and have never seen anything like this.  Pretty much sealed the deal I will not be purchasing an MBPr.  I wish all of you the best of luck in finding a satisfactory solution from Apple.

Interesting...I noticed this issue probably 1-2 months ago beginning to develop. It is now, after reading this forum and a couple of news stories, apparent to me that it wasn't something I did but instead a fault on Apple's side. Why haven't they fixed this? I have long bragged about Apple's support and product quality, and the willingness to fix things as conveniently as possible when things do go wrong. I do hope they will issue a free fix soon. It's the Apple thing to do. Don't fail me now.

Yep same here, got this started just before the first year was up.  Now 4 months later but Apple Australia will fix it no problem because of the warranty situation we have here.

This exact same thing happened to me on a late 2013 MBP. The yellowish/green stains only appeared on the black border. I took it in to an Apple Store in Houston and they told me that there was some sort of issue with the glue that joined the different layers of the screen and that it had been caused by exposure to heat, either by overheating of the computer or from an external source such as sunlight. (I did use to leave my Mac in direct sunlight in my very hot home office... not any more). They said the display had to be replaced and that it was covered by the warranty, but I couldn't leave it because I do not live in the States and was flying back home shortly. They told me they would leave a note on the system that the Certified Support Partner could see back home in Mexico. Sure enough, I took it in to a Partner back home and they changed the screen for free no questions asked.

    So look at this post:

He got his replaced. Ever since I've seen cases of this edge damage around here I thought it had to do w/ the double surface adhesive that holds the front glass in.
