Q: ATV problems after new modem

We have a new modem/router from AT&T. After the install I tried to fire up the Apple TV but the remote app on my phone didn't work. Which makes sense because

of the new password and name for our wireless connection. So I figured I'd need to use the actual remote for the ATV. Problem is that the remote died about a year ago. I have one here from my nephew's ATV but that won't work either. The Apple TV starts up but I can't use the buttons on the remote to move the cursor over from Computer to Settings. The ATV is completely unresponsive to the physical remote.

So I'm wondering, are Apple TV remotes specific to the ATV that it came with? Or maybe this ATV is kaput.

Any thoughts or help is very much appreciated.

Thanks, Bob

    Howdy Bob,

It sounds like you’re running into an issue remotely controlling your Apple TV after changing wireless router and switching to a new remote. Try unpinning your Apple TV from the previous remote as shown in the article below, and then you should be able to control the Apple TV with the new remote.

How do I unpair my Apple TV from a remote

You can use any Apple Remote to unpair Apple TV from a remote. If you lose the Apple Remote that you paired with Apple TV, a replacement remote won't work until you unpair Apple TV from the lost remote. If your Apple TV status light (LED) blinks 3 times in quick succession when you press keys on the remote but fails to respond on-screen, try these steps to unpair your remote:

    • On an aluminum Apple Remote, press and hold the Menu and Left buttons for 6 seconds.
    • On an earlier, white Apple Remote, press and hold the Menu and Previous/Rewind buttons for 6 seconds.

You can also use these steps:

    1. Choose Settings > General > Remotes from the Apple TV main menu.
    2. Choose Unpair Apple Remote.

When you’ve successfully unpaired a remote, Apple TV displays a broken chainlink symbol (broken_chainlink-1.png) above an icon of a remote. You can now pair Apple TV with a different remote.

    Cheers,
