Q: Lag in Typing in Yosemite's Mail w/ External Apple Keyboard

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have been having a very annoying problem with delayed typing response in Mail when I have my external USB Apple keyboard (current model with numeric pad).  It is a sporadic issue.  Typing will be responsive, then there are 2-4 second delays in response.  I have only witnessed the issue with Mail and when using the external keyboard.  Problem does not occur in other programs or when using my MacBook Pro's built in keyboard.  Nor did the problem exist prior to upgrading to Yosemite.

My equipment is a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina.  When on my desk, I have it connected to a 23" Apple Display (original LCD), USB Apple Keyboard, Logitech cordless Trackman, and a Drobo firewire external drive.

Has anyone else witnessed this issue?  Or have an suggestions on correcting?

Thank you in advance!

ooooOOOooo...  I was looking in the wrong place to get rid of the "Markup" item.  I thought it was a setting in Mail and couldn't find it.  It's not -- it's in System Preferences > Extensions > Actions.  I went in there and found that it was ticked!  Yay!  So I've unticked it and have my fingers crossed.  I'll report back in a few days.

I just customized a new-message window toolbar in Mail and maybe haven't seen any type-display delays since.

I think the System Preference might be for all Markup, including Preview. (Any other apps?)

Yep, the System Preferences tickbox is for all apps -- I'm hopeful that this is going to smooth out typing in other apps as well (I've had minor issues typing in Firefox text boxes like this one, for example).  The markup capability seems to be still available in Preview even after unticking the box.  So I'm not sure what that setting supposed to do.  I don't think I'm going to miss it, if I get typing back to normal.

Unfortunately, I've goofed up the "scientific" test because I also just followed your lead and customized the new-message toolbar.  So now I've made two changes and won't know which one did the trick.  But I don't care!  Bwaahahaha...

well, whatever else is true...the 'slow keys' is a reasonable workaround, and 10.10.3 (which should come soon) will provide a real fix.

Have to agree -- no lag here after almost a week.  There are the two things that seem to be working.

System wide:  Go to System Preferences > Extensions > Actions and untick the "Markup" box

Mail only:  Customize the new-message toolbar (open a new message, right-click/control-click on the tool bar, select "Customize Toolbar" and add or subtract something)

If somebody feels frisky they could do the customize-toolbar thing *only* and see if that fixes the lag.  I did both at once and don't know which thing actually did the trick.  I was experiencing very minor lags in other applications, which also seem to have gone away (although they were much less noticeable so it's hard to know for sure).

I'm too old to be someone who "feels frisky," but I only removed the Markup icon from the new-message window, and haven't noticed any of the old long, long delays. Mail still seems a tad slow to respond to typing, but maybe I'm being hypersensitive on that issue.

I'm a pretty fast typist, but I also compose as I type, so I backspace a lot.

Thanks Klahane -- I'm old enough that "frisky" only works on selected days.  :-)

Part of the trouble some of us were running into is that we don't have a "Markup" icon to remove in the customize-toolbar choices (no idea why).  If that's the case for some of you, as it was for me, the system-wide option might do the trick.

The turning OFF of a system wide extension (Markup - check box) “UNCHECK IT” nothing else needs to be done… That is the only thing I did and NO MORE F...ing LAG!!!! (Go to your system preferences > Extensions > Actions > UNCHECK THE BOX - Markup
That is all you need to do and put this to bed…

Or you can just remove the markup button on the top of your email.  It works!

This has worked for me for many days now. I don't notice any typing delay.

    Looking forward to 10.10.3 release.

It didn't fix it for me. I just found this thread; tomorrow I will try the markup solution.

Thanks Kirk. Number two just worked for me. It's nearly a year since your post and still Apple haven't fixed this. or it's come back again in the latest update.
