Q: Retina iMac 3tb Fusion drive Boot Camp failure

Trying to install Windows 8.1 to a 1tb Bootcamp partition on 3tb Fusion drive. BCA creates the partition, Windows installer sees it, but requires formatting it, but then it can't install to it. I get an error that it can't create or see the partition. I'm assuming this has to do with BCA creating the partition someplace Windows can't handle it (past the first 2.2tb of the drive).

Here is the info requested in a previous thread.

Good to see the disk slices cleaned up.

To add the remaining slice (disk1s5) use the following command.

    diskutil cs adddisk 49E959A5-5F3C-4178-8A2D-067D2C853A96 disk1s5

Here is the help output of the command. Please post the output of diskutil cs list once you execute the addDisk command.

    diskutil cs adddisk

Usage:  diskutil coreStorage addDisk lvgUUID NewMemberDeviceName

Add a new physical volume to a CoreStorage logical volume group.

Ownership of the affected disks is required.

    Example: diskutil coreStorage addDisk

             11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555 disk4s2

Can you also post the the output of sudo fdisk /dev/disk1? (This will show what the current MBR) looks like.

You can now either use EFI boot and use BOOTCAMP (disk1s4) or a new Hybrid MBR can be created for the legacy BIOS installation. The Hybrid MBR can be very easily created using GPT fdisk | SourceForge.net.

The resizeStack command created the MBR, which causes issues for EFI installation. The simplest method of making it a non-MBR setup is to download GPT Fdisk (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/) and use the following command sequence.

The first character is what is typed. The part after "-" is what the command is meant to do.

    sudo gdisk /dev/disk0

x - extra functionality (experts only)

    n - create a new protective MBR

o - print protective MBR data

w - write table to disk and exit

    y - confirm

Reboot and try the EFI installation.

Wait. Make sure you are selecting the Bootcamp partition. I'm not familiar with an EFI boot. I created my Window install from BCA. But I do remember getting an error the same or similar. I had to format the Bootcamp partition to NTFS which I did after closing the error message. Then the install continued.

Since you have Free Space in the LVG,

    Free Space:   1614580658176 B (1.6 TB)

the LV Macintosh HD can be extended (please replace <NewSize> with appropriate value)

    diskutil cs resizeVolume 718A36B4-10B9-49A9-B585-CFC222080507 <NewSize>

See the following for examples - Re: OSX and Bootcamp discussion

Apple support is supposed to be contacting me Saturday with a solution from the Bootcamp engineers. For now, I'm going to try to revert my hard drive back to the original 3tb single partition.

    Thanks.

Okay....removed the Bootcamp partition via Disk Utility, but it wont' let me recombine the partitions. Also, missing some space. How do I merge these together and recover my lost space?

Were you not planning to try the EFI installation after the MBR was removed?

No, I'm going to wait and see what solution they come up with. Wasn't really happy with the size of the Bootcamp partition we created (wanted a full tb). Also, wasn't too sure how to reclaim the empty space I lost in the process. I don't know the exact size I need or even what "LV" stands for (logical volume?). A lot of these instructions are assuming a higher level of technical competence than I possess. So for now, I'd like to get back to where I started and see if the Apple engineers have a simpler process. If not, no big deal. At least they'll know Bootcamp is busted again with 3tb Fusion drives. When I spoke to their technical support, they seemed pretty clueless about the whole thing. They even suggested I contact Microsoft support, as if this was a Windows problem.

The simpler option is to backup OS X to a TM Backup, using Internet Recovery and erase and restore from Backup which was prior to the current disk work.

The harder method is to remove remove disk1s5 from the CS LV (Logical Volume) using diskutil cs removeDisk and reformat it as free space.

Reformat the BOOTCAMP disk as Free Space. This will reconstitute the Macintosh HD2 as Free Space. You can use DU to then extend the original upper half to contain the lower half.

Okay...just tried the first method. Did not work. After restoring a time machine backup from two days ago, it came back with the partitions exactly the same.

Can you explain the harder method.

    Thanks.

    1. Remove disk1s5 from the CS LVG - diskutil cs removeDisk 62E20106-159B-4939-87C7-915CC8D682C5

    2. Format it as HFS+ - diskutil eraseVolume jhfs+ Part1 disk1s5

    3. Format BOOTCAMP as HFS+ - diskutil eraseVolume jhfs+ Part2 disk1s4

    4. Merge Partitions - diskutil mergePartitions jhfs+ "Macintosh HD2" disk1s4 disk1s5

    5. Use DU to expand the CS volume.
