Jan 24, 2015 1:11 PM in response to blaw0013by Japib, you need to get an iPhone or another Cellular device connected to your wifi network. (the Macs use the wifi location, which is saved in internet databases, which are updated automatically by cellular devices.

Jan 24, 2015 1:16 PM in response to Japibby blaw0013,This idea sounds promising, except that I do have a iPhone connected to my wifi network. It has been since the move and setup (2 weeks) and my computer still thinks I am in the old location.

Yeah, it doesn't appear to update very quickly.

Mar 17, 2015 6:33 AM in response to rajohns08by blaw0013,Thank you, but this doesn't help. It seems that the weather app looks at the location of the computer, as it is determined through the System Preferences. I suspect the problem lies there. sigh...

Mar 19, 2015 7:34 AM in response to Eric Rootby blaw0013,Eric, thank you for trying to help. Here is what happened (again today) when I did this. Although I am physically in zip code 30619 and I had manually set the time zone to Easter, the location was changed back to my previous address at 94109 when I clicked the box to set time zone automatically and re-turned on my wifi.

Jun 6, 2015 2:45 AM in response to rajohns08by uworlds,Hey there rajohns08,
This helped thank you.
My problem is that it seems the lock goes down on my privacy setting after I do it ... so even though it did update the location ... I need to go in and do it every time I relocate as it seems the lock prevents the system from automatically detecting location in the weather app.
Do you know how to let the weather app (accessed in the top right corner of Yosemite) change automatically to change the location for the current location carat marker?
Many thanks!

Jun 8, 2015 4:50 AM in response to blaw0013by John Lockwood,There are two main methods the location of a computer is determined, one is by looking up the TCP/IP address used by the computer to access the internet and comparing that to a database of TCP/IP addresses - this is known as geo-ip tagging. The other is by looking up the 'name' aka. SSID of the WiFi network and seeing what geographic address that is associated with. In your case I suspect it is the later that is taking president and because (presumably) you have brought your WiFi router with you to your new address but left it with the same name this information has not yet been updated.
A possible quick and dirty solution would be to change the name of your WiFi network, this would get rid of the out-of-date information.
In theory your iPhone should be using its GPS signal to override the WiFi location and furthermore if it is connected to the WiFi it should use the GPS information to send an update to Apple telling it the new location of your WiFi. Try and assist this by making sure your iPhone is indeed connected to your WiFi and not someone else's and then while it is still connected use the Apple Maps application to search for your current location and as a further means of exercising it, try plotting a route from your current location.

Jun 8, 2015 10:57 PM in response to John Lockwoodby uworlds,Hi John,
Thank you very much for this, great to know!
You are correct, my iPhone detects the address much better though I find it does not get very granular on location. For example, in most areas in the centre of Sydney, it just says Sydney; yet on my laptop it tends to go to the suburb level of detail.
You are also correct I am using wifi (NetGear hotspot) for Internet access, and I changed the network name. It seems though that I still need to go into the Privacy Settings and untick/retick the Weather app in order for the location to refresh otherwise it remains locked. Even though I untick the lock (for being able to change the tick), it locks up again as soon as I leave. I would expect that leaving the lock turned on would still let the app check the location and update it automatically but maybe that is not the case (in other words the location can update dynamically if I allow it even if I lock down the option to change the tick).
Do you think there is another setting that I can update?
I really appreciate your help.
Kind regards,
M

Aug 18, 2015 1:41 PM in response to blaw0013by Merlino80,If this doesn't help:
Go System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy [tab]
Uncheck and recheck 'Weather' and it's back to normal.
You can test this:
For update location in weather widget is simply delete this folder ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.ncplugin.weather

May 2, 2016 9:31 AM in response to blaw0013by crazy mac wizzard,Just ran into this as well after moving recently.
Tried the other tips, but none worked.
Finally switched off "Enable Location Services" in the Privacy panel. I was warned this would switch off Find My Mac. Proceeded anyway.
After a few seconds, I enabled Location Services again (I was prompted with a question, which was something to do with updating the location, I said Yes), and my location was updated to the correct address. Hope this helps someone else!
