Q: I can't turn off iCloud keychain

After my icloud keychain on my MBP running Mavericks failed to sync with my ios devices, I have been trying to turn off my icloud account on my mac as troubleshooting guides have suggested. When I uncheck the keychain icon I get a prompt that comes up asking if I want to keep a copy of the keychain on my mac, delete the keychain, or cancel. No matter which option I choose the icloud keychain is not deleted from keychain access, and the check box automatically re-checks itself. I can not turn off icloud without disabling keychain. Help!!

    Same issue.

I tried going to Keychain Options and changing my Security Code, but that didn't trigger any good behaviour.

I also tried opening Keychain Access and doing first aid, but that didn't help either.

The iCloud Sign-out process appears to be conditional on the Keychain service being de-selected from iCloud, but something is stopping the Keychain process.

    I found a solution:

I signed-in to the same iCloud account on another OS X machine (my MBP).  I did this as a Primary iCloud account, not a Secondary (because the Keychain service is not available on Secondary iCloud accounts).  To expedite things, I deselected all services offered except Keychain.  Keychain went to the verification process, which offers an option to either verify via another device signed-in to iCloud, or via an iCloud Security Code and an SMS to my phone, if you have set this up.  I elected the latter.

Once iCloud was signed-in and the Keychain service verified and enabled, I then went back to the other OS X machine (my iMac, the machine with the problem) and was able to uncheck Keychain at System Preferences>iCloud, "Delete from Mac" and then sign-out.  Yay!

I then went back to my MBP and was able to uncheck Keychain and sign-out of iCloud without a problem, which disproves one theory that the problem is caused by Keychain always needing at least one OS X device signed-in.

I have no idea why this worked, but it seemed to snap Keychain out of its idiot-loop.

Happened to me, I eventually was able to remove it by reseting the iCloud keychain. See below.

OS X Mavericks v10.9 or later:

    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click iCloud, then select Keychain.
    2. When asked to enter your iCloud Security Code, click Forgot Code.
    3. Click Reset Keychain to replace your iCloud Keychain in the cloud with the iCloud Keychain items on your Mac.
    4. Click Reset to confirm. You'll be asked to create a new iCloud Security Code.

Hello, after a hole afternoon reading and trying I found the solution! or my solution.

As soon as you disable the keychain in other devices, it unchecks automatically.

In my case, i did it in the iphone, and thart solved the problem to UNCHECK KEYCHAIN IN MY MAC.

Hope it helps someone to save his afternoon!

    YES!!! THIS WORKS!!!

Just spent quite sometime myself on this. Problem started after the last Security Update 2015-003, yesterday for me:

Could not turn off Keychain in iCloud settings and hence could not sign out of iCloud on my MBP.

I used the setup procedure to enable Keychain in iCloud on my iPhone (which I had never used before, I thought, although it seemed think I had???) and low and behold the Keychain turned off on my MBP. I was then able to turn it off on my iPhone (don't like storing PWs there or in the "cloud").

I've tried all of these things, yet nothing works.

I will refrain from my opinion of Apple, but I am hoping someone has an alternative option here?

    Hi richsadams,

Hope this helps, go to your keychain access in the launchpad, then preference-general, click "Reset My Default Keychain". I recommend you to delete all the log in items by going Users&Groups-Login Items. Click that minus sign to make sure there is no apps auto-launch at the startup. Then restart, your iCloud should be signed out automatically at the time you log in to your Mac account.

I've tried all these methods and still cannot get keychain to disable or log out of iCloud. iCloud Keychain works perfectly on my other devices (mac pro + iPhone 6+) but for the life of me, I cannot get it to work on my new rMBP 15" iCloud keychain always say "waiting for approval from another device" no matter what I do. Here's what I've tried so far:

    1. Disable iCloud keychain on all devices except macbook

    2. Unchecking iCloud keychain on macbook will automatically recheck it self

    3. Reset keychain with or without code (still won't uncheck, still says waiting for other device)

    4. Removed all startup items

    5. Reboot in safe mode

All to no avail. When enabled, keychain works on my other devices fine. Turn it with my iPhone, then mac pro and my iPhone asks for authorization. Do the same on the macbook and nothing. It been like this since Yosemite came out on a new machine that was upgraded to yosemite the day I received it. It is very frustrating!

Funny, after doing all this resetting, and then just giving up. I went and reenabled keychain in the order of iPhone, Mac Pro and went to macbook and it was disabled! Clicked enable and request and bam! iPhone asks and it now works! There is mojo at work here but I can't seem to isolate the steps. Either way, its working now... very strange....
