Q: How to get rid of an unwanted display during session shutdown?

I recently inadvertently downloaded InstallMac while trying to download

another piece of software. I managed to abort the installation while it was

running and to delete the package. I also deleted the InstallMac directory in

Application. I do not presently find any of the Geneio files mentioned in the

numerous articles about this problem, nor the Application process.

So, I guess I managed to get rid of the "product".

Well, not quite. Something remains from the aborted installation.

Whenever I close the session of the user account from which the aborted

installation was done, or when I shutdown or restart Maverick from this user

account, I briefly see a window with the question: "Continue the Installation?

Choose Abort if you wish to cancel the installation." Under this question, there

are an "Abort" and a "Continue" buttons.

This window only appears briefly and then it vanishes. It doesn't appear

when closing the session of another user account, nor when shutting down from

said other account. So its display must be part of the session shutdown process

of the user that aborted the installation. It doesn't seem to be harmful, but I

would like to get rid of it and do not know where to look for this.

Could anybody, please help me there?

   Denis MAILLARD.

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.

Thank you. This tool seems very useful.  It mentioned two genieo agents in my user library rather than in the system one. I hadn’t noticed them because I had been looking only in the system library. I deleted them. However, it also mentions the Omnibar extension in Safari (see below), which I almost never use (my default browser is Firefox). How can I suppress it ? I mean, in the Safari preference extension window, there is only iTube Studio (I’ve no idea what this is, by the way), not Omnibar.

By the way, I forgot to mention that, since I deleted the genieo files in my user library, the original reason for me to enter this note (the presence of this "Continue the installation?" window at session shutdown) has disappeared after the following reboot.

But I'm now worried about this ghost Omnibar extension in Safari that Etrecheck keeps mentioning even after replacing the Safari image and my user Safary library with copies from a backup dating from before the accidental download.

Thanks for the reply. However, I forgot to mention that, following a hint from Etrecheck, I've already downloaded AdwareMedic and it does not find any adware. And I've also done everything mentioned in the second pointer. But Etrecheck keeps mentioning the Omnibar Safari extension and I don't see it in the Extension part of Safari preferences. Something must be wrong there.

As for Trusteer, I've run it without any problem for years.

Is there a way to find out what criterion EtreCheck uses to report the following:

    Safari Extensions: ℹ️

        Omnibar [Cached] Adware! [Remove]

    ?

I've checked and rechecked that all the files mentioned as parts of Genieo, InstallMac or Omnibar in many articles, including Malware – Adware removal – Apple Support have been deleted from my system and EtreCheck still mentions this. I can't find ANY extension in Safari (I removed iTube Studio, that was present, but that I don't remember having ever installed). What is the reason why EtreCheck still reports the presence of this ghost extension?

    Thanks for any hint.

I eventually managed to get rid of it!. I suppose it was my fault: I did not pay attention at first to the fact that the Omnibar file (which was not present anywhere on the system) was tagged with the "[Cached]" mention in the EtreCheck report.

I cleaned all system and user cache files using the Onyx tool and now, after a reboot, the Omnibar Safari extension is no longer reported by EtreCheck.

Thanks again to Eric Root for pointing me to the EtreCheck tool. When paying enough attention to what's in the report, it really is a great help. Though I suppose it could be useful to put something explicit about the [Cached] attribute and how to get rid of unwanted cached items in the hints provided by EtreCheck.

It could be also a good thing to mention in the various articles about how to get rid of these %&!§$* adwares that they may be hidden in caches that survive reboots and to explain how to clean the cache files.

I also download MacInstall (Genieo, Omnibar 1.2) but did not install the Application. Using iMac OS X 10.9.5.  No real problems except Completer install prompt and disk image appears on restart and other various times.

Using this following procedure (edited by me for just Macinstall) the red highlighted files are the only files on my machine. Question is, can I just manually delete the highlighted files, except Frameworks  (and then delete Frameworks after restart) and be successful?

    Thanks, Dan from Granger

    Here's the procedure:

    Check your Safari extensions

Go to Safari > Preferences, then click Extensions. If you don't want an extension or can't determine what it does, select the extension from the list, then click Uninstall. • Omnibar

    Remove certain ad-injection software

Follow these steps to remove Downlite, Conduit, or Genieo. If you're asked to enter a password when moving a file to the Trash or emptying the Trash, enter your administrator password.

Remove Genieo, also known as InstallMac

First follow these steps to stop the Genieo or InstallMac processes, if they're running. Be particularly careful to restart your Mac when instructed.

    1. Open the Activity Monitor app:
    2. You can use Spotlight (Command-Space) to search for "Activity Monitor," then choose Activity Monitor from the search results.
    3. In the Activity Monitor window, click the CPU tab, then click Process Name at the top of that column to sort the list alphabetically.
    4. Look for the process "Genieo." Select it, then click the Force Quit button in the upper-left corner of the window.
    5. Look for the process "InstallMac." Select it, then click the Force Quit button.
    6. Quit Activity Monitor.
    7. From the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
    8. Type /private/etc/launchd.conf in the text field, then press Return.
    9. If the file is on your Mac, a window opens with the file you searched for already selected. Drag the file to the Trash.

Restart your Mac, then continue to the next steps, below.

Remove the files related to Genieo:

    1. Select each item in the list below, starting with /Applications/Genieo.
    2. Choose Edit > Copy.
    3. From the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
    4. Choose Edit > Paste to paste the line you copied into the text field, then press Return.
    5. If the file is on your Mac, a window opens with the file you searched for already selected. Drag the file to the Trash.

Repeat the steps above for each item in the following list. If you get a message that the folder can't be found, continue to the next item in the list.

    /Applications/Genieo

    /Applications/InstallMac

    /Applications/Uninstall Genieo

    /Applications/Uninstall IM Completer.app

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.download.plist

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist

    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist

    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist

    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist

    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist

    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist

    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client

    /usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib

    /usr/lib/libgenkitsa.dylib

    /usr/lib/libimckit.dylib

    /usr/lib/libimckitsa.dylib

    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.genieo.global.settings.plist

    ~/Library/SavedState/com.genieo.RemoveGenieoMac.savedState

Now do the same for each folder in the following list. When these folders open, no file will be selected. Instead, select all items (Command-A) in the folder and drag them all to the Trash.

    ~/Library/Application Support/Genieo/

    ~/Library/Application Support/com.genieoinnovation.Installer/

    ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.genieo.RemoveGenieoMac.savedState/

Restart your Mac, then continue to the next steps, below.

    1. From the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
    2. Type /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework in the text field, then press Return.
    3. If the file is on your Mac, a window opens with the file you searched for already selected. Drag the file to the Trash.

Restart your Mac, then choose Finder > Empty Trash to permanently remove the files.

Eric, you hit the nail on the head. Downloading EtreCheck first, which highlights the problem areas, points to AdwareMedic for eliminating those. I don't know which crap I inadvertently downloaded, but with these two steps the annoying message at shutdown and all my malware are gone.

    Thanks, and cudos to you,
