Q: Retina iMac 3tb Fusion drive Boot Camp failure

Trying to install Windows 8.1 to a 1tb Bootcamp partition on 3tb Fusion drive. BCA creates the partition, Windows installer sees it, but requires formatting it, but then it can't install to it. I get an error that it can't create or see the partition. I'm assuming this has to do with BCA creating the partition someplace Windows can't handle it (past the first 2.2tb of the drive).

Here is the info requested in a previous thread.

BCA method failing exactly as before. Created a 1tb Bootcamp partition with BCA. Started Windows setup. Had to format the Bootcamp partition as NTFS. Selected the partition, hit Next. Failed with message: "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one."

Did BCA let you delete the partition and restore the 3TB Fusion Drive?

It gives me the option to remove it, so I assume it will. I'm going to leave the partition in case Apple support wants to use it as a starting point (because it can take a long time for BCA to create it).

Same Issue. The BC partition is beyond the first 2TB, and the MBR will not work. Windows EFI installation should be tested.

What is the output of sudo fdisk /dev/disk1 ?

Don't have time to test EFI install right now. Apple support should be calling any minute. Will try later if their solution doesn't work.

Okay....so Apple support was no use at all. Not really surprised. The response from the engineers was based entirely on an incorrect assumption that Windows installer couldn't see the partition at all. Needless to say, none of the suggestions (verify disk, repair disk, verify permissions, repair permissions, re-create partition with BCA) did any good.

Tried EFI boot after getting off the phone with Apple. Exact same error as before.

The solution for me at this point is to hand this computer off to my wife (it will be a nice upgrade from her older iMac) and build myself a new PC. I'm pretty sure Windows will install on it without issue. I will miss the beautiful screen, but thinking about trying a curved ultra-wide coupled with a video card that can actually handle it (ie. not a mobile card).

    Thanks for all the help.

The EFI installation will also give you an error, side the FAT partition needed for EFI Windows is also beyond the 2TB limit. The only method I know it use a Free Space partition which fits within the first 2 TB for EFI to work. Legacy BCA install will also work in that configuration.

Following these posts, this is the exact same problem I'm experiencing with my 3tb Fusion drive iMac.  With a twist. Not knowing there were issues with installing Bootcamp and Windows 8.1 on a 3tb Fusion drive I went ahead and did it.  And it worked great for a few weeks.  In my innocence and ignorance I even removed and reinstalled the Bootcamp partition and reinstalled Windows 8.1 several times with no problem.  The last time I removed the Bootcamp partition for some random reason that I don't recall at this time I was left stuck in the place where Windows 8.1 tries to reformat the Bootcamp partition from FAT to NTFS.  After the reformat the Bootcamp name is dropped and Windows 8.1 can't find a partition to install to.

My quest so far has been, What Changed?  And how do I get everything back the way it was the first time I installed Bootcamp and Windows 8.1 and it worked?  Is there  something magical or mystical about the way Apple formats these drives when they come from the factory that allowed Bootcamp to work the first time?

Unless you recreated the CS volumes/volume groups, the factory installation works. It is possible to run into issues, because of disk fragmentation. Does BCA partition your disks correctly? Can you post the output of the commands mentioned in this thread/discussion?

BCA appears to format as FAT32 like the instructions say.   During the Windows install process there is supposed to be a reformat to NTFS.  After that NTFS reformat the name Bootcamp disappears from the Bootcamp partition and I get the message back saying that Windows Installer doesn't recognize a partition to install to.  At that point the Mac Disk Utility has the partition marked as Free Space.  Bootcamp with then remove that partition and make the disk whole again.

Which outputs would you like to see?

    I appreciate the help.

CS List looks like this after removing the Bootcamp partition:
