Q: At startup on my MacBook Pro, I am unable to type in the password.

I am eventually able to after doing an emergency shutdown several times.  What is the problem?

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    You found the forum for pre-2006 Mac notebooks that predate all the the MacBook variants. Are you asking about a MacBook Pro as in the thread title or a MacBook Air as in your equipment profile. They have different forums. If you confirm you model, we can ask the Hosts to move you to a forum more appropriate to your product and, as an added advantage, one that gets more views,.
