I had this issue with my iPhone - drove me nuts. Tried everything.

It appears to be an issue with a persistent file in the Purchases folder in the iPhone/iPad directory, which I could only access with a file browsing utility (iBrowse). Once installed you can browse to the Purchases folder and delete all the entries.

Check the box in iTunes to Manually Manage Music and then delete the grey U2 tracks.

    Sync and they'll be gone

    Fixed!

Gasboy, you are a legend !!

I have tried everything to get this unwanted U2 album off my iPhone and nothing has worked, including Apple's removal tool. Every time I plugged my iPhone back in , the greyed out circles re-appeared again.

iBrowse is the answer. Delete the stuck entries from the purchased folder and the album that I did not request and did not want disappears forever.

    Top man  :-)
