Feb 26, 2015 5:42 PM in response to scafedeby buckeyeindy,Thank you, this worked for me as well, encryption restarted and was done in a few minutes. I bought a new Macbook pro on 1/24/15 and unplugged it to go to another room during the encryption, got the "paused" message. I generally like apple products, but this really seems to be a major issue.

Mar 11, 2015 10:48 AM in response to scafedeby shottyotter,Thanks for your help, but this did not work for me. I reset the PRAM and ran repair permissions and disk repair on MacintoshHD using Disk utility. I ran repair on the main MacintoshHD and the second locked one. However there is no change. Running 10.10.2 (latest)

Mar 13, 2015 10:38 PM in response to zinnjdby Nield,So I bought a brand new Retina MacBook Pro 15" Mid-2014 model with all the fixins, enabled FileVault during system setup, and got this same problem.
I didn't do the NVRAM and PRAM reset. Guided by 10+ years of IT experience working on both PCs and Apple products, I decided it was better to just start over before I got too invested in my install because there's a good chance the half-enabled FileVault encryption would have nerfed the system before too long. This is how I fixed the problem. FileVault is now working perfectly for me. Don't do this before backing your files up if you care about losing them.
Step 1: Power off the system.Step 2: Hit the power button to turn the system on.
Step 3: As the system is just powering on (like... right after you hear the Apple gong), hold Command + Control + R to enter the Internet-based recovery. This is NOT THE SAME as the Command + R recovery mode. It loads the recovery software from the internet and gives you more freedom in Disk Utility.
Step 4: Open Disk Utility.
Step 5: Click on the system partition, click on File, and click Unlock the drive.
Step 6: Once the drive is unlocked, click on the partition, go to the Erase menu, and erase the partition with a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition. DO NOT SELECT THE Mac OS Extended (Encrypted, Journaled) option. You want to make a fresh, decrypted partition.
Step 7: Exit Disk Utility and install the operating system. It'll take about two-ish hours to download and install the new OS, so put on a pot of coffee and pick a show to marathon on Netflix while you wait.
Step 8: Do not activate FileVault encryption while you're setting up the computer for first-time use. Once that setup is complete and the computer is up and running, go into System Preferences, into Security & Privacy, and turn on FileVault. From that point, do absolutely nothing with the machine until it finishes encryption.
Good luck, folks.

Mar 15, 2015 3:03 PM in response to zinnjdby banna15,I had this issue too! I called apple support and they helped me, but it was not an easy fix. It took over 2 and 1/2 hours. Make sure your laptop is backed up before you even start the process! When I did this, they made me recover my laptop, but there was much more of a process before hand and afterwards. CALL APPLE BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING! do not just restart your laptop, it is much more of a process than this! But hopefully this helps! Another way to chat with apple is to go online and you can chat there! If you look at Nields example, that is what you would do! But, the apple person I chatted with while doing this said that you don't need to turn on FireVault again unless you feel it necessary! you can keep that off by going into system preferences> security and privacy> firevault> turn off FireVault! Hopefully this helps! They have not found a resolution to this besides recovering and restarting for right now, but hopefully with the next update or so they will fix this!

Mar 18, 2015 1:12 AM in response to zinnjdby tzouhalem,I've read about 80% of this lengthy thread and while some solutions worked for some, my brand new rMBP15 was still stuck encrypting right after the initial install. So after 2 frustrating hours, I decided to just blow away the logical volume group. In my case, I created a bootable USB drive with Mavericks using another Mac.
1. Boot into USB drive containing Mavericks install disk by holding the Option key during booting.
2. Go to Terminal and type "diskutil cs list" and note the length cryptic number at the top next to "Logical Volume Group" it should look something like this: "C699A7CC-9B85-4A6D-96C8-87CFB18DE173"
This number is unique to every Volume group, do NOT copy this number here.
3. Select & copy your LVG number into clipboard
4. Still in Terminal type "diskutil cs delete YOUR-LENGTHY-LVG-NUMBER" This will kill all your data, so make sure you have backed everything up before this step.
5. Exit Terminal and start Disk Utility
6. In Disk Utility, create a new Partition "Macintosh HD"
7. Exit Disk Utility and select "Install Mavericks" from the options
This is the brute force method and it solves nothing about Yosemite and FV2, but some of us need to get back to work instead of spending hours on the phone with Apple support or reading hundreds of thread messages.
