Q: iPhone 6 constantly disconnecting from Audi MMI

My iPhone 6 constantly (and, it appears, randomly) disconnects from the MMI system in my 2013 A6. I updated the cable to the latest version (genuine Audi) to see if this solved the issue but it continues to do so. I didn't have the problem with my iPhone 5 which I never bothered to upgrade to iOS 8, so I suspect it's an iOS 8 problem. I've tried multiple ways of connecting, phone off, connect, then switch on. Phone on, connect, MMI on etc. etc. to no avail. My current suspicion is it may be a charging issue as my phone was 100% charged this morning when I plugged it in, and everything worked fine but when I plugged in this evening (circa 45% charged) the constant disconnecting occurred again. It will connect, play a few seconds/minutes of a track, disconnect and then the process repeats.

Hi guys, having real problems with this issue. It appears the Bluetooth is working fine so I have my contacts and can receive calls etc.

My aim is to get the music going from my phone whether is be from the iPhone itself or via spotify. Also to try and get it to charge my phone. It appears to work on iPhones 4 with the old cable.

I Have seen other discussions about system updates but I am still ios8 although there is an ios8.1 to be installed. Also seen discussions about battery life making a difference. also some guys have mentioned that the cable code of AD and AL With the green and yellow appears to make some difference?

    any advice? Thanks

I was having the same exact issue. I tried updating to iOS 8.2 and that did not resolve the issue. What did work for me was having the phone already 90% + charged before plugging it in. I have the AL cable with the yellow rings, and as long as I have close to a full charge, I do not have the disconnect issue.

I had exactly the same..useless to wait for an iPhone update. Just get this and stream it over bluetooth :-) Works like a charm!

    Happy streaming :-)

Indeed: this this to be a common proplem: my iPhone 6 constantly (and, it appears, randomly) disconnects from the MMI system in my 2014 A5.

Quote from  MrB20VT's  statement: "I updated the cable to the latest version (genuine Audi) to see if this solved the issue but it continues to do so. I follow MrB20VT suspicion: " it may be a charging issue as my phone was 100% charged this morning when I plugged it in, and everything worked fine but when I plugged in this evening (circa 45% charged) the constant disconnecting occurred again. Fully (or at least 90%) charged my Iphone 6 and the AUDI MMI connects perfectly well. It seems to be proofed that the problem is caused by IOS 8 rather than by any other software, app or devise.

So APPLE have someone solving it and get us updated.

I'm pretty sure this is not just a charging problem. In my Audi A3 (2013) I'm only using bluetooth for the connection between the iPhone and the car to hear music from Spotify and it keeps disconneting randomly. Yesterday I've been to an Audi distributor, but they didn't have a clue. On my way home I stopped the car and took a video of the disconnects. The thing is even though the music stops playing and the media panel says "looking for bluetooth devices" the phone function still seem to work without a problem. I can see all my contacts or the call history (both of them are not stored on the Audi).

Hi isthatariot, This sounds like you are having the same problem as me! I try and play music through my spotify and/or iphone music with the Bluetooth and have no luck at all! I can however make calls and use all the phonebook features through the multi media functions! It just however wont find my phone through media!

    Hi David,

so you can't even start playing music via bluetooth or do you also have random disconnects while playing?

    Dear all,

I have the same issue with the MMI system with my new Audi 2015 A5. When using the AL cable to hook up my Iphone 6 partly charged it will keep disconnecting after a minute or 90 seconds. Only when the phone is fully charged the system works perfectly. However, today I also tested my phone in a different Audi and there everything worked fine. Also, I checked a different phone and cable in my car (Iphone 4) and that worked fine also. I guess the problem is with the MMI system itself. First week of august my system will be checked... I will keep you posted.

Hey folks my Audi Q3 with iPhone 6 Plus I don't have the disconnect problem you all seem to be having.  My iPhone is connected to the 30 Pin with a Lightening connector, all is good but the artwork does not display on the MMI screen?  Does anybody know what the issue could be.

I just wanted to give you all a short feedback as my problems with the bluetooth connection have been solved. I mentioned that the problems with the iPhone disconnecting from the Audi started when I attached a tile (https://www.thetileapp.com/) to my keys. When I looked at the bluetooth settings of my iPhone every time the tile connected to it the audio connection to the car got lost. I don’t know if the tile is faulty because except for this it works without problems. After changing the connection settings of the tile in the app to a manual connection when needed I never had a random disconnect between the car and the iPhone again. I don’t think this will be the solution to everyone here, but maybe some more people have a tile or another bluetooth finder that cuts their car connection.

I'm having this issue with my 2013 Audi S5, it's better when you put the phone in the glovebox holder (hiding under the shelf) but the phone still randomly disconnects and requires the input to be changed (i.e. media to radio and back to media). I'm using the Yellow MMI lighting cable, I've had my car at the dealership three times now with the technician being able to reproduce the problem on two iPhone 6's and an iPhone 5. I've had the cable and the MMI control module replaced without a solution. I've also seen the issue occur under iOS 7, 8 and 9 so at this point I'm pretty certain this is an Audi problem and I've confirmed that I have the newest firmware version for my head unit. I've spoke to Audi Canada customer relations today (and was told to pound sand) but it's been escalated and I'm suppose to have a manager call me tomorrow. As a side note, the technicians at my dealership have also spoken to Audi's technical service line multiple times without being able to find the cause.

I would encourage everyone here to call customer relations in their country and start having this issue logged. I've owned my Audi for 2.5 years now, one of which I spent waiting for the cable to be released and another 1.5 years of back and forth to the dealership. I've used many other cars in between (that aren't Audi) and was able to use my iPhone 5 and now 6 without issues.

One other note: I got a 2015 Audi S4 as a loaner car this past dealer visit and was provided with a yellow MMI lighting cable to test with. i tried two different iPhones with the car and had the same disconnect issue (iPhone 6 and 5) so I'm certain this is an Audi MMI or cable issue.
