Mar 24, 2015 6:51 AM in response to BendBoby joe_7399,Hi BendBo,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that the AirPlay icon is not showing in the menu bar on your Mac running Mavericks. Your computer will automatically detect when an Apple TV is on the same network. In this situation, I would recommend ensuring that both your Mac and your Apple TV are on the same Wi-Fi network.
OS X Mavericks: Wirelessly mirror your Mac screen to your HDTV
OS X automatically detects an Apple TV when it’s on the same network, and displays the AirPlay icon in the menu bar. When AirPlay Mirroring is active, the status icon is blue.
Best regards,
Joe

Mar 24, 2015 8:07 AM in response to joe_7399by BendBo,Thanks Joe, but I am well aware of how it is supposed to work. The point is that it doesn't.
I do appreciate that you would offer your help on this, but you should probably read past the first three words of the subject line if you really want to help.

Jan 11, 2016 10:31 AM in response to BendBoby coxylox,I'm having the same issue. Ironically, if I open the Display preferences window, the icon reappears after a short time. If I close the settings window, the icon goes away a few seconds later.
I'm running 10.10.5 BTW
