Q: Why doesn't my f1 and f2 button work (for screen brightness) but others do?

The F1 and F2 buttons do not work but others do. I can change the brightness in the system preferences though. How can I change it without downloading other apps to configure it?

I understand that your built in brightness keys (F1 and F2) are not working as expected while the other function buttons on the keyboard do respond as expected. In this situation, I would suggest reading over and working through the suggested troubleshooting steps in the Some keys don't work as expected section in the attached article.
