Q: My POP keeps failing

Hi

Asked about this last week and answers helped but the error keeps repeating. Essentially, I keep unticking the SSL box and 'use password' box.  This  works for a while but as soon as I switch out of mail it resets itself to SSL etc and I do not receive e-mail.

Nor can I get the Mac to recognise any password to permanently re-set. Now I have to be doing something wrong knowing me.

Grateful for any advice!

Oh yes, my ISP is Plusnet (in UK).

Thanks!

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

The ISP is the one that dictates how your email client (Mail) has to connect to them and what protocols to use. Have you checked with them or their support site on what settings you are supposed to use?

    Hello thank you,

Yes I have checked with them but their staff are not IT literate and were not helpful. The staff were frightened by my questions and blamed Apple directly for ALL problems.

They are PLUSNET.  I will re-approach in the hope they made a mistake in HR and got some one with a brain working there.

Most ISPs I have encountered have some sort of instructions on how to set it up and, if you dig deep enough, doing it on a Mac can be found - all on their website somewhere. I just checked for you and here it is:

Check Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced to see if there is an Automatically detect and maintain account settings box. If so, uncheck it. If that works, you must do that for each account.

Yes I did eggs and followed their on line guide. No affect at all. So I switched the router off and later re-booted and it all worked as normal. All told a most odd experience.

Yes I did this and also switched off the router for a bit. The mail then came back as per normal. And has been ok since.  I also reduced the pick up of e-mails to once an hour as the ISP (Plusnet) can not handle much more. (UK ISP we have low standards here!).

So all is fine at the moment.

Many thanks for your kind assistance.

Thanks.  Indeed they had a guide but not for Yosemite. So I did Mavericks as best I could. My ISP is rather backward (Plusnet) and I fear that they just scrape buy on low standards. The key was switching the router off. But as mentioned earlier I am delighted to say it is OK now!

    Thanks again.

I have to reset my router at least once a month or so. No idea why, but I've gotten used to it: when it exhibits strange behavior, that is what I do first to troubleshoot. Mine only has to be off for 30 seconds or so.

I think we have a mutual need to be sympathetic to our plight. But as you rightly say switching off does the trick! So let's keep doing it.
